Obama also reappointed to the board Carlyle Group CEO David Rubenstein, who was first appointed in 2004. In 2010 he was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Kennedy Center.

In January, Rubenstein pledged to give $50 million to the Kennedy Center. The wealthy Washington businessman has also given $5 million to the National Book festival, $4.5 million o the National Zoo for its panda habitat and $7.5 million to help repair the Washington Monument from earthquake damage. Forbes estimates his worth at $3 billion.

Then-President George W. Bush originally appointed Rubenstein to the board. Rubenstein, who worked in the Carter White House, has close ties to the Bush family: former President George H.W. Bush served as an adviser to the Carlyle Group.
