Rimes made political donations to both Obama and then-Sen. Hillary Clinton during the 2008 presidential race, according to Federal Election Commission records. She also contributed to Obama's 2012 reelection campaign and even volunteered at a phone bank for him.
In January, Rubenstein pledged to give $50 million to the Kennedy Center. The wealthy Washington businessman has also given $5 million to the National Book festival, $4.5 million o the National Zoo for its panda habitat and $7.5 million to help repair the Washington Monument from earthquake damage. Forbes estimates his worth at $3 billion.
Then-President George W. Bush originally appointed Rubenstein to the board. Rubenstein, who worked in the Carter White House, has close ties to the Bush family: former President George H.W. Bush served as an adviser to the Carlyle Group.
