“Vice President Biden has been a champion of civil rights for his entire career, from his leadership on the Violence Against Women Act to his strong support for marriage equality,” said HRC President Chad Griffin in a statement.   “As Senator and Vice President, his work to advance LGBT equality is just one chapter in a remarkable lifetime of service.”

Griffin has been a close ally of the White House, and aided in the president's reelection effort. After the ruling that overturned California's law barring gay marriage, Obama phoned the gay rights leader and the plaintiffs in the case while they were conducting a live television interview.

The October 5 dinner featuring Biden is expected to draw 3,400 guests and is already sold out, according to the group.
