Police respond to man on fire at National Mall

Police rushed to aid Friday of a man who might have set himself on fire on the National Mall, according to multiple reports.

“We have a report of a man on fire at 7th and Independence,” D.C. police spokeswoman Saray Leon told The Washington Post.

A helicopter and a number of emergency responders were seen on the Mall, where the man was found “conscious and breathing,” according to Leon.

The man was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, Fire Department spokesman Timothy Wilson told the Post

“No indication on our end of what caused the fire, the only thing we can pretty much comment on is we were dispatched to the call and responded to it,” Wilson said. “So how it started, don’t know.”

Metropolitan police closed 7th St. between Constitution Avenue NW and Independence Avenue S.W., citing a citizen had been injured.

The man’s identity was not immediately known.
