The former mayor of Alexandria, Va., said the man who shot several people including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) at a congressional baseball practice in the Washington suburb on Wednesday “was living out of his suitcase.”

Bill Euille told the Washington Post that he frequently spoke with the shooter, who has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill., while he worked out in the mornings at the YMCA.

“He was a very friendly person,” the former mayor said. “But what I did notice about this gentleman is he’d open up his gym bag and in it, he had everything he owned. He was living out of the gym bag. That, and he sat in the Y’s lobby for hours and hours. Outside of myself, I don’t think he knew anyone else in town.”

The shooting occurred at the baseball field near the YMCA in Alexandria, which was on lockdown early this morning. Euille said he had spoken with the YMCA’s manager who said Hodgkinson was at the gym early this morning before heading to the field at around 7 a.m.

President Trump announced Hodgkinson had died of his injuries this morning. The shooter expressed anti-Trump and anti-Republican sentiment on social media.
