"Tonight our thoughts and prayers remain with one friend who is not here, a man that we have all come to know and respect and to love, Congressman Steve Scalise," Trump said during the annual congressional picnic on the South Lawn of the White House.

Trump noted that the House GOP leader's son and daughter were in attendance at the event Thursday evening.

"We just gave them a tour of the White House, just gave them a beautiful tour of the White House," Trump said.

"They got the A tour. Sometimes we give the B, the C, the D and the F tours, just like, here it is, let's get out of here. We gave them the A tour," he said.

Scalise was upgraded from serious to fair condition on Wednesday and remained in the hospital to recover a week after being shot at a congressional GOP baseball practice in Alexandria, Va.

Trump noted that members of both parties came together the day after the shooting for the annual congressional baseball game.

"I wanted to go there, but our folks from Secret Service said maybe we ought to take a pass. I wanted to be there so badly, you have no idea," Trump said.

"It's our hope that this unity that was displayed that evening can continue to grow and thrive between Republicans and Democrats," he added.
