Ivanka, Trump's elder daughter and White House adviser, took the president’s seat during a meeting of G-20 leaders in Hamburg as he briefly stepped away during the proceedings.

The episode drew backlash, as some criticized having a family member take the president's place during a meeting of world leaders.

Navarro, a vocal critic of the president, said Russians knew the photo would "be deemed controversial" and "get us going in U.S."

Trump's eldest son responded to the GOP strategist, saying that Ivanka was "way out of your league."

"You can belittle her all you want w your snark, but we all know 1 on 1 she way out of your league," he wrote.

"I love being attacked by pundits who somehow make a living in politics but haven't been right about anything in 2 years. So out of touch!" Trump Jr. tweeted.

A Russian official attending the session tweeted a photo showing Ivanka seated next to British Prime Minister Theresa May and Chinese Premier Xi Jinping.

Turkish President Recip Tayyip Erdogan and German Chancellor Angela Merkel were also seen seated nearby.
