A longtime ally and personal friend of President Trump says in a new interview that the president's rhetoric has "shocked" and "stunned" him.

Billionaire Thomas Barrack Jr., who has been friends with Trump for 30 years, told The Washington Post that the president appears to be appealing to a nationalist base with his speeches and tweets.

“I tell him all the time: I don’t like the rhetoric,” Barrack told the Post.

“He thinks he has to be loyal to his base,” he said. "I keep on saying, ‘But who is your base? You don’t have a natural base. Your base now is the world and America, so you have all these constituencies; show them who you really are.’ In my opinion, he’s better than this.”

Barrack, an Arab-American, said he disagrees with some of Trump's major policies, including the president's efforts to ban immigrants from various Muslim-majority nations from entering the U.S. and his proposed wall along the Mexican border.

Barrack was a major donor to Trump's presidential campaign, the Post noted, and served as the chairman of his inaugural committee.

His name has been floated for White House chief of staff should John KellyJohn Francis KellyMORE leave the position.
