Eliminating the practice of text messaging while driving is a top priority for the Transportation Department, Secretary Ray LaHood said today.
The department will convene a summit of law enforcement officers, lawmakers and public safety advocates next month to determine how to reduce the risky practice.
"This is one of my highest priorities," LaHood said today on CBS's The Early Show. "I want texting eliminated while driving. I just think we'll save a lot of lives and a lot of injuries."
A handful of Democratic senators have introduced legislation that would force states to ban texting while driving or risk losing federal highway funds.
A recent study by Virginia Tech found that texting while driving makes a driver 23 times more likely to get in an accident.
