DNC: Pawlenty trying to 'out-Palin' Palin

By Jordan Fabian - 09/04/09 01:03 PM ET

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) on Friday hit at Minnesota governor and potential 2012 presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty (R), comparing him to former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) for criticizing President Barack Obama's back-to-school speech.

Pawlenty joked that the speech, which is set to take place next week, will encourage schoolchildren to write the president, only for them to be subject to a White House effort to gather Americans' personal information.

Several Republican members of Congess last month accused the White House of collecting the personal data of people opposed to current healthcare reform proposals.

"There are going to be questions about -- well, what are they are going to do with those names and is that for the purpose of a mailing list?" he told WCCO radio today.

"The only joke here is Tim Pawlenty, who is clearly trying to out-Palin Sarah Palin in his sickening attempt to please the radical right-wing Glenn Beck's of the world," DNC Press secretary Hari Sevugan said in a statement.

Some conservatives have slammed Obama's message to students as an attempt to "indoctrinate" the country's youth, a charge that Democratic leaders have derided.

"Outrageously, Governor Tim Pawlenty, who, as a leader in his state, should be encouraging the success of our children, would rather pander to the extreme right wing of the Republican Party by dismissing and joking about next week's speech," Sevugan added.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs addressed criticism of the speech at his daily briefing today, saying "I think we've reached a little bit of the silly season when the president of the United States can't tell kids to study hard and stay in school."

Gibbs is living in fairy tale land. He dismisses everything as "silly" when it questions this JOKE of an administration.BY bpower on 09/04/2009 at 14:40
There's a pretty sizable chunk of the electorate that's "radical right-wing Glenn Beck's." I'd play to that base, too, if I was running.BY ReaganTMan on 09/04/2009 at 14:44
It is stupid and soon as the children go out to recess their going to forget more than half of what he said…as far as the older kids they know what they should and shouldn't do as they say u can bring a horse to water but u cant make him drink…hes on an ego trip he thinks what he says to them is going to make a difference…NOT…BY Shilo on 09/04/2009 at 16:21
BECK AND FOX ARE WINNING. Why? Better Products.More Loyalty. More Believers. MSM: If you want to win, start coming up with superior products. Right now,you can't compete. MSNBC: Crawl out of the Obama tank for starters. Scarborough isn't enough. He alreadyburned his bridges with the base.BY don on 09/04/2009 at 19:48
Teaching your children disrespect for the President of the United States is below contempt.BY Deborah Hart on 09/04/2009 at 19:52
Americans need to wake up…they have been sleeping and thinking all is well…WELL it is NOT…we are sitting by and the radical agenda is being forced upon us..I may not be a Harvard graduate..(frankly I am glad) but I have been able to understand what is happening in our country and I am absolutely blown away…Glenn Beck is alerting folks to the truths..while Obama and R. Gibbs are calling us silly and think we are too stupid to figure it out…SHAME ON THEM.BY Shirley on 09/04/2009 at 20:05
The government should not be issuing a study guide to poll students. I don't care what administration this is or what ideology they want to push. If you want to encourage students to do better fine, but keep your GD "study" guides and questionnaires out of American classrooms.BY Harold on 09/04/2009 at 20:58
What a bunch of traitors you stupid people are. ( Glad you did not graduate from Harvard?!) You are supposed to support your country and it's president. What in the name of God is wrong with you? So the president wants to give kids a pep talk, it sure beats starting wars for profit, spying on citizens, and torturing. Go shoot your friends in the face and stop the BS.BY chris howe on 09/04/2009 at 23:57
Glenn Beck is laughing the whole way to the bank. His little experiment at how to control minds is wildly successful. But really, how hard is it to control these minds…So far, the President is an arab, christian, muslim, kenyan, so[***]t, communist, nazi, racist that hates white people, hates his mother, and eats arugula. OK, Glenn, I agree, you can't trust anybody that eats arugula. He must be a martian. Where do I get the koolaid?BY Todd on 09/05/2009 at 18:03
Back to Pawlenty's "joke" about Obama collecting kids' addresses so he can (whatever)… and the White House asking for info on what lies are being circulated, so they can try to refute them:- The President is not asking for kids to write to him. The kids are asked to write letter TO THEMSELVES.- The White House site did not ask for respondents to turn in their neighbors/inform on anyone/compile a list of supposed "enemies of Obama's statist agenda", etc. They just wanted to know what misinformation was being circulated - not who was passing it on.BY Kerr Mudgeon on 09/06/2009 at 04:13

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »
