House Dem: There will be no bipartisan bill
There will be no bipartisan healthcare reform bill, one member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus flatly declared Sunday.
Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) said that there wouldn't be the bipartisan bill favored by the president and some centrist Democrats, with Republicans to blame.
"I appreciate the work that's been done by the president to try and get a bipartisan bill, but there will be no bipartisan bill," Waters said during an appearance on ABC.
"The Republicans are not going to support a credible health care reform bill led by the president or the Democrats," Waters explained. "We're not going to get their support."
President Obama has long said he would prefer for there to be bipartisan support for healthcare reform, a priority shared by some leading centrist Democrats in the Senate who have been working on a health bill. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the lead Republican negotiator on a bipartisan bill as ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, has also said he would like to see 70 or 80 votes for a health bill.
Waters asserted that Obama had reached out enough, but simply could not expect Republicans to come around on the bill.
"This president has reached across the aisle. He's done everything," she said. "He's stroked, he's cajoled, he's begged, but the Republicans are not supporting him."
