Tancredo says Wilson shouldn't have apologized

Former Congressman and presidential candidate Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) came to Joe Wilson's (R-S.C.) defense today, saying the conservative lawmaker shouldn't have apologized for heckling President Obama last night.

"Joe is right,” said Tancredo, “Obama is a liar.”

Tancredo, who was a strident and sometimes controversial opponent of illegal immigration while in Congress, said Wilson was entirely right to question the President's assertion that illegal immigrants would not be covered under healthcare reform.

The House version of healthcare specifically bars coverage for illegal immigrants, as both FactCheck.org and Politifact.org have pointed out. But Republicans are demanding stronger enforcement of that clause.

"Republicans attempted to attach language to the Democrat health care bill in committee that would have required the government to verify the legal status of anyone receiving benefits under the plan and imposed enforcement mechanisms for violations of that requirement," Tancredo said. "Unfortunately, the Democrats voted that amendment down.”
