Loud 9/12 protest reaches the Capitol

By Tony Romm - 09/12/09 11:01 AM ET

Thousands of conservatives are converging on the U.S. Capitol today to protest the Obama administration's handling of healthcare, tax policy and a host of other domestic and international issues.

Their efforts, led by a coalition of conservative groups that includes FreedomWorks and Tea Party Patriots, culminate weeks of similar demonstrations that took place throughout the country. The march mostly traces its roots to the "tea party" protests that dominated headlines this past April.

"We’ve had enough of the out of control spending, the bailouts, the growth of big government and the soaring deficits," the protest's Web site proclaims. "And we reject the future tax increases to pay for all of this spending and debt down the road. We are gathering on 9-12-2009 to deliver our message in person that we’ve had enough!"

About 30,000 registered for the "9/12 march" online, but it is unclear whether that many turned out on Saturday. The D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency could only estimate that the protesters filed a number of blocks along Pennsylvania Avenue.

Those who did attend the rally were very vocal in their dissatisfaction with the Obama administration. Many shouted, "Obamacare makes me sick!" and "Czars belong in Russia!" A group of protesters even chanted "Tell the truth!" -- in support for Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.), who shouted "You lie!" to the president on Wednesday -- while CNN reported from the scene.

But the high point of Saturday's rally is likely to be the speech delivered by former House Republican Leader Dick Armey (R-Texas), who heads one of the groups organizing the protest. He will be joined by Rep Mike Pence (R-Ind.), Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), who will also address the rowdy crowd, The Washington Post reported.

You mean the Republicans are sponsoring this? The party of NO IDEAS??? Gee. What a surprise. They have nothing to say, nothing to offer and are doing the same old, tired, fearmongering tactics. Wake up, America! These people are NOT your friends. Any president runs up a deficit in time of trouble…look at FDR and Reagan for two prominent examples. I would respect these folks if they had an alternative to big insurance, but they don't.And folks, don't let them fool you. We DO have a single payer system. It's called Medicare and it works. It works every place else on earth too. Wake up and say NO to the party of NO!BY soccer mama on 09/12/2009 at 12:51
No, AMERICANS sponsored this. This is not about one party against the other. It is about We The People who have had enough of the crap that has come out of Washington from both sides. But as usual, the media has to make it into partisan politics because that is all they know.BY Wolfshawk on 09/12/2009 at 13:32
I remember when Bush was President the Democrats had no alternative to any policy proposed by the Republicans, it was always no. There has been many proposals by the right in healthcare but the left says no to them too.Second all these people who have protested today dislike the Republicans as much as the Democrats. The Republicans screwed up bad and now the Democrats are screwing us up even more. They are both pathetic and are parties of self serving power hungry autocrats who do not serve the interests of the American people. It is not the federal governments business based on the Constitution to provide healthcare ,social services of any kind, or unemloyment benefits (social insurance is a rippoff and a giant ponzi scheme). Based on the Constitution it is only service is to provide service to the States and a proper defence. Income taxes should only be collected by the states and the federal government should only raise taxes from the State governments themselves. Federal income tax is illegal based on constitutional law. The whole concept of only taxing people at the State level was based on the reason the Colonies rbelled agianst England. If Congress was serving the peoples interests then Federal Taxation would be reasonable but the founders realized that the more distant money is away from the people the more likely tyranny would happen. A government that does not serve the people is a tyranny. This is what we have now in America. This is why hundreds of thousands are marching on WashingtonIt is about time the people returned the power back to the States and the people of America. Democrats and Republicans both suck, wake up America!BY Keith Davies on 09/12/2009 at 13:33
SoccerMama says medicare works. What a complete and utter joke. I work with Medicare and witness first hand the waste and abuse and will surely witness how the Obama cuts will hurt my patients. If the Democrats in Congress EVER cared about the waste and abuse in medicare they would have taken care of it decades ago and refunded our tax dollars. But no, they wait until 2009 and come up with another bloated entitlement program to shift the "savings from Medicare" to. REALLY????? No more lies. No more entitlements. Government is the problem, not the solution. Soccermama. You, lady, need to get a CLUE.BY Karen on 09/12/2009 at 14:36
The 9/12 march on Washington is not about the Republican or Democratic party. This is about core values, the Constitution, and the direction of our country. The people at the rally and those just like them all over the country will choose principles over a party each time they vote. Any politician not listening to his constituents should be looking for another job. God Bless America.BY Jerry Peterson on 09/12/2009 at 14:59

Soccer Momma you are an ignoramous, I'm not even a Republican, I'm intelligent and informed enough to realize that both parties are essentially the same and work hand in hand. A lot of 9/12ers realize this too. I can list many many real healthcare fixes. Some republican ideas, some independent conservative ideas… the fact is your party of communist will stop nothing short of forcing single payer healthcare and of course the rest of the country won't tolerate it. There are other ideas, many many, but your party will never incorporate any of them because all your party wants is absolute control. Go screw yourself, your nothing but a short sighted useful idiot and are apparently ignorant to the oppositions ideas that aren't talked about on your government controlled new channels.BY Chardster on 09/12/2009 at 15:26
The views and policies of this administration is a rolled up package of lies and deciept! Americans are really suppose to believe a guy who proclaims throughout his entire administration he will surround himself with wholesome, bi-partisan, well experienced staff throughout his Presidency. Then when actually in office all he surrounds himself with is more radical lunatic wackjobs even more severe than the few that surfaced with his association during the campaign. If you voted for Obama even after hearing about his radical church, and terrorist neighborhood friends then you are even worse off than before. I can't help you. And now we are expected to love this universal healthcare idea coming from this radical idiot? It's going to be run by the same idiots who are self-destructing Washington, and trampling all over our constitution! I will never understand why liberals in general love the idea of being oppressed and abused by the government who implements the same values and actions that work against them in the first place. Yes it is absolutely true that we need to find a way to fix our healthcare system. It surely isn't perfect but why would you trade in your good running Chevy Malibu for a Yugo? And one last point. All I hear from this President is "Reaching accross the isle"…and…"Bi-Partisan work"!! Yea right!! Ha ha ha ha!!! That is so insane! The liberals in Congress shut down any attempt to work with the conservatives. Their view is that it will be there way…or the nuclear option way! It's a load if you actually believe the liberals have been working with the republicans in congress to try and find a solution.BY American Blues on 09/12/2009 at 15:29
The government has no right to demand that you buy a product or service from anyone. Yet thats exactly what they're attempting to do with Obama's insurance mandate. Then they double down on stupid by turning compliance and enforcement over to the IRS, an institution that can't even figure out its own tax law.BY Michael Farenholz on 09/12/2009 at 15:33

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »
