Clinton takes sides in Calif. Gov. primary
Bill Clinton has endorsed San Francisco Gavin Newsom in the California gubernatorial primary, giving the young liberal a big boost in his campaign against California Attorney General (and former Governor) Jerry Brown (D).
There's a couple points of political history to keep in mind here. First, Newsom was one of Hillary Clinton's biggest backers in the 2008 primary. Second, Brown ran against Bill Clinton in the 1992 Presidential primary, and some Democrats faulted him for seeming to hold a grudge that hurt the party.
Clinton will trek to California next month and appear with Newsom at both a fundraiser and an event in East Los Angeles.
Brown had thus far outraised Newsom substantially, and some Democrats questioned Newsom's electability, especially given the Mayor's controversial decision to allow gay marriage in San Francisco. His decision was later struck down by a court.
