Moran: Wilson's interruption tops celebrities' outbursts
Kanye West stole the stage at an awards show, Serena Williams verbally accosted a referee -- but one lawmaker said Monday that Rep. Joe Wilson's (R-S.C.) outburst last week still tops them both.
"I think Joe exposed to everyone himself for who he is and what he is," Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) told TMZ. "I don't think he ever would have behaved in that disrespectful a way towards any other president, which tells you something about him, doesn't it?"
Perhaps testing Moran's pop culture knowledge, the reporter quickly followed up: "Would it be fair to say that [Wilson] should be categorized in the same category with Kanye West and Serena Williams this week, when they made outlandish remarks and had to apologize afterward?"
But former gubernatorial candidate replied without much hesitation. "No... I didn't see anything particularly offensive about Serena Williams," Moran said. "She got upset... at what she considered a bad call. Well, that happens. That's got no relationship to what Mr. Wilson did, sitting back in his seat and, under no particular stress, then yells that out, and in such a disrespectful way to the Office of the Presidency."
"And Kanye West?" Moran just shrugged.
The reporter then asked Moran whether the punishments recently levied on Serena and Kanye should also apply to Wilson, who decided not to apologize from the well of Congress on Monday.
Said Moran: "Well, Kanye West lost his street credibility, wasn't that up to the street to determine that? Who's to say he lost his street cred? So, Serena can probably afford the $10,000 [fine], but I was rooting for her, frankly. In terms of Joe Wilson, I guess he raised a $1 million... didn't he? That's a reflection of our politics. But his opponent did as well. I think the best thing we can do, which I intend to do, is contribute to his opponent."
