GOP senator: Pelosi fears Wilson becoming a 'hero'
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is allowing a censure vote against Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) to go forward out of fear that Wilson is becoming a "hero," Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) said Tuesday.
Wicker, a former member of the House until late 2007, condemned the resolution set for a vote today that would officially chide Wilson for blurting out, "You lie!" during President Obama's joint session address to Congress last week.
"The people started speaking out and of course Joe Wilson became somewhat of a hero," Wicker said on the conservative Paul Gallo radio show in Mississippi.
"Nancy Pelosi just cannot accept that," Wicker added. "If I were on the House floor today, I would not vote to sanction Joe Wilson."
Wicker said that while Wilson shouldn't have made his outburst, liberal lawmakers have sought to make a cause out of this. Many Republicans have also condemned today's vote, though at least one GOP lawmakers -- Rep. Bob Inglis (R-S.C.) -- said that Wilson should apologize on the House floor.
Wicker insisted that he wouldn't support such a resolution, though.
"If I were on the House floor today, I would not vote to sanction Joe Wilson," he said. "The left is just trying to make political hay on this."
