Senators confident Gitmo prisoners not coming to Kansas
Both of Kansas's senators Wednesday dropped holds on several of President Barack Obama's nominees after expressing confidence that Guantanamo Bay detainees will not be housed at a site in their state.
Sens. Pat Roberts (R) and Sam Brownback (R) had blocked the confirmation of Obama's pick for Secretary of the Army Rep. John McHugh (R-N.Y.) and other Defense and Justice department posts. The couple stymied the confirmations in reaction to an administration proposal to move suspected terrorists housed at Guanatamo Bay to Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
Roberts and Brownback put out a statement after meeting with Obama administration officials.
"We believe that the administration has a good understanding of obstacles and concerns and is giving them proper consideration," they said. "In a good-faith effort to continue moving this dialogue forward, we are releasing our holds on all Department of Defense and Department of Justice nominees. We are confident that because of this good-faith dialogue, detainees will not be transferred to Fort Leavenworth."
