NRCC head: Pelosi likening opponents to assassins

By Michael O'Brien - 09/17/09 01:33 PM ET

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is likening opponents to assassins, one top Republican lawmaker claimed Thursday.

National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) Chairman Pete Sessions (R-Texas) asserted that Pelosi had used "insulting rhetoric" when expressing a concern that harsh political rhetoric could lead to actual violence.

"No longer content with criticizing concerned citizens for being ‘un-American,’ the Speaker is now likening genuine opposition to assassination," Sessions said in a statement this afternoon. "Such insulting rhetoric not only undermines the credibility of her office, but it underscores the desperate attempt by her party to divert attention away from a failing agenda."

Pelosi drew on her own experience as a San Francisco political activist when San Francisco supervisor and gay rights activist Harvey Milk was murdered.

"I have concerns about some of the language that is being used because I saw this myself in the late '70s in San Francisco, this kind of rhetoric was very frightening and it created a climate in which violence took place," she said.

Sessions took strong exception to Pelosi's words, calling them a "verbal assault on voters."

"Voters are justifiably frustrated with Washington, and the Speaker's verbal assault on voters accomplishes nothing other than furthering her reputation for being wildly out of touch with the American people," he said.

Jeff Sessions: spot onBY Yobi on 09/17/2009 at 14:58
Nan's botox has evidently damaged her brain and induced paranoia. She sees Nazis at tea parties and assassins everywhere. Between Pelosi, Reid and Obama, have we ever had a more incompetent leadership?BY Mike on 09/17/2009 at 15:01
Speaker Pelosi has good reason for concern as do all Americans. The right wing has already demonstrated its proclivity for inciting violence and we already know the danger posed by home-grown, right wing terrorist groups in our own country. Sessions needs to realize if the shoe fits, he wears it.BY pgbach on 09/17/2009 at 15:12

I'm sorry, as a liberal independent, this is just as bad as the racism accusations. It is a pathetic, last ditch effort to get public sympathy, where there is none. The truth is, Nancy, and, unfortunately Obama, and other undesirables in the legislature HAVE RUINED THE BEST CHANCE of change that most young people, in this generation, will ever have. It is so incredibly sad. They had the hearts and minds of an entire generation, and proceeded to filthy it up, to poo on themselves, to backstab every honest voter, and to reward every lobbyist, crook and taxpayer thief in their dirty little world. There are NO good feelings left toward any of these navel-gazing, career-worshipping political thugs. They just don't realize it yet. Its over. But, for the young, the dedicated, the street workers, the bloggers and the donors, it WILL BE THE SADDEST POLITICAL STORY OF THIS GENERATION.I really don't know where we go from here except more intense rage. So very sad.BY tropicgirl on 09/17/2009 at 15:26
Every Presidential assassin in US history has come from, or was supported by, the American left.BY Mike on 09/17/2009 at 15:42
This is no longer just politics. This is an utterly vile, unconscionably dangerous gambit, and somebody needs to reign this megalomaniac in, STAT.BY Chris on 09/17/2009 at 16:02
I commend the comments made above mine. We all want a better America for eveyone. Tropicgirl, power does funny things to people. No one will gain anything craming down or being uncivil towards those that don't agree. Hopefully one day we will get leadership that is worthy of our support. Until then, we will keep on trying. Speaker Pelosi is "Speaker of the House". Not speaker of the dem's. Her leadership ability is not only the worse I have ever seen, it is sad.BY Paul on 09/17/2009 at 16:08
Why is this woman doing this? First she calls people who disagree with Obama's policies unAmerican and Nazis and and an Angry Mob, when none of that is true. The protestors have not been angry. They have been peaceful and even clean up all their trash after they gather. Then the Dems launch an all-out campagin to call us racists. Now they say we are assassins. Why can't they just refute our complaints and show why their way is better and why we are wrong? Why does the President have call us liars in his Joint Session speech and then get so upset when someone else finally can't take his combative unPresidental BS on second more and responds to it? Why does the President say in his firey, angry, bitter speeches that he's "gonna call people out." That sounds like a thug gang member speaking to another gang member. It's combative and threatening language. It's unworthy of the President of the United States. No other president in history has ever talked like that to the American people. Why isn't he acting Presidential and acknowledging all people's points of view and trying to win and convince people instead of just lashing out at them. I've never seen anything like it. If people are mad, they have every right to be. And if it comes to violence it will likely be from one of Obama's supporters ginned up by the President and the Dems to "get in our faces." and someone who has been whipped into a frenzy to believe that everyone who disagrees with Obama is a racist. They are destroying this country. May God help us.BY Texas on 09/17/2009 at 16:19

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »
