Fred Thompson spurns GOP special election nominee

By Aaron Blake - 09/28/09 10:27 AM ET

Former GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson just announced he's backing the Conservative Party candidate in the special election in New York's 23rd district.

In the latest sign that GOP state Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava could have trouble on her right flank, the former senator from Tennessee is backing Doug Hoffman over his own party's nominee.

"Doug is a conservative, who understands that our freedom is our greatest strength, that life is a precious gift, and that getting back to our founding principles will ensure our nation's security and prosperity for us and for our children and grandchildren," Thompson said in an e-mail from his political action committee, FredPAC. The e-mail includes a link to a page for donations to Hoffman's campaign.

The conservative Club for Growth has also toyed with backing Hoffman over Scozzafava, releasing a poll last week that showed an even race.

One wonders if some other conservative Republican icons might get involved on Hoffman's behalf. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee sure hasn't been afraid to ruffle feathers.

Great news. Now some more prominent Republicans had better step up and follow Fred Thompson's lead here. Folks, there are many reasons why REAL conservatives shy away from endorsing the RINO chosen by county GOP leaders.BY JerseygalNNY on 09/28/2009 at 15:12
pssssssssst, this year we pick our own, dont tell the GOPBY S on 09/28/2009 at 16:21
I'm Republican and I'm not voting for Dede, she might just as well be a Democrat. What was the Republican party thinking backing her?!Let's vote Doug Hoffman in and send a message to the (RINO's) Republicans In Name Only.He has my vote.BY Conservative Woman on 09/28/2009 at 23:58
With one Republican election after another getting hijacked by radicals, many propped up by the Club for Growth, the Democrats are going to have an easy time of it in the near future. Eventually the Democratic party's going to have to split, though, in order to fill the vacuum left by an increasingly weak and marginalized Republican party. There's no way the Republicans can continue to win elections if they keep putting up crackpots like Hoffman, as well as lunatics in other states like Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania or Bill Sali in Idaho.BY Frank Goodman on 09/29/2009 at 08:37
I'm a Republican I would not vote for the 2 defacto Democrats Dede and Bill Owens. I wish I were in the 23rd. District. Doug would get my vote. All Military Defense Contractors should rally around Mr. Hoffman. The Club For Growth Fred Thompson have got it right on this District.BY Jay Bernhardt on 09/29/2009 at 09:51
Who cares what lazy Fred Thompson has to say? The only thing the Club for Growth grows is the number of Democrats in Congress. Why don't they go after democrats and not moderate Republicans?BY Victor Patterson on 09/29/2009 at 11:28
If the Democrat wins, the Republicans will get what they deserve by running a liberal like Dede.If they ran a candidate like Doug Hoffman, they would have conservatives and republicans supporting Doug. Just shows the people choosing Dede are as out of touch as the Washington crowd.BY Conservative Woman on 09/29/2009 at 12:54
Doug's got my vote. We need a voice from the NORTHERN part of this district and Doug is it. He will fight for the taxpayers and vote against increases in taxes. Our Republican party has sure missed the boat by picking Dede as the best candidate for this seat.BY Adirondacker on 09/29/2009 at 16:03
Doug took time to meet me and a group of friends this Monday. I found him to be very straightforward in his answers and that he says what he believes. If you believe in personal rights, smaller government, and that budget deficits are wrong, then Doug is the correct choice for this race.Doug Hoffman has my support.BY Michael Riggin on 09/29/2009 at 22:30
Shafted by RINO…Ouch, Rush got this one right. Democrats are down dirty with that plant Dede…BY Jay on 11/04/2009 at 20:47
