White House slams Glenn Beck on blog

By Eric Zimmermann - 09/30/09 03:24 PM ET

The official White House blog slammed Glenn Beck today, accusing the host of displaying a "disregard for the facts in an attempt to smear the Administration's efforts to win the Olympics for the United States."

Last night, the conservative firebrand attacked the President for lobbying hard to get the 2016 Olympics to come to Chicago.

Today, the White House released a point by point rebuttal of some of Beck's statements.

Here's an example from the post, which is titled, "Trying to Turn a Point of Pride into a Moment of Shame":

RHETORIC: BECK SAID VANCOUVER LOST $1 BILLION WHEN IT "HAD THE OLYMPICS."   Glenn Beck said, "Vancouver lost, how much was it? they lost a billion dollars when they had the Olympics."  [Transcript, Glenn Beck Show, 9/29/09]

REALITY: VANCOUVER'S OLYMPICS WILL NOT TAKE PLACE UNTIL 2010.   Vancouver will host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games from February 12 – 28, 2010 and March 12-21, 2010, respectively. [Vancouver2010.com, accessed 9/29/09]

At the end of the post, the White House encourages viewers to visit Politifact.com for "even more Fox lies."

The White House has called out Fox News before. When President Obama made the rounds on the Sunday talk shows to push healthcare reform, he pointedly excluded Fox. He's also described Fox as "entirely devoted to attacking my administration."

well well…Glenn Beck knows the white house watches daily and on many, many occasions, Glenn has asked if they do not agree, or see and error in his views, to please give him a call immediately…to me, Glenns show is well thought out, factual, and probably is hitting home…BY boozy on 09/30/2009 at 17:25
Glenn really has to be on the right track for them to be reacting this way! Way to go Glenn!!! We're listening!BY Alice Martin on 09/30/2009 at 17:31

Obviously, this blogger has not followed any of the finance problems Vancouver is having! They have borrowed hundreds of millions. They are looking for US cities to help bankroll them. And, isn't it interesting that GM (government motors) is a $72 million sponsor. Isn't that great to see that bailout money working for our friends to the north. You progressives can't learn from history nor plan for the future! Your commie utopia is the road to [***]!BY Linda on 09/30/2009 at 17:55
PS Dear Mr. Gibbs, you have a knack for calling foul, perhaps you are better suited to be a NBA ref. I hear they may be needing some soon.BY jadedfellow on 09/30/2009 at 18:05
wonder if Glenn's lack of teleprompter led him to mistake Vancouver for Montreal who hosted the 1976 Olympics. According to Indopedia.org, "Montreal did indeed lose money, over $2 billion dollars (US), when it was all said and done."BY oldmomster on 09/30/2009 at 18:07

Glenn Beck is a clown hatemonger. As a conservative, I see no redemptive value in either his radio television shows, nor in his personal appearances. But his clowning has made him super rich. How much of his money do any of us get? He, like me, can afford health care insurance; but, as a health care provider I experience daily the pain suffering of middle class families that have no, unfair, or not enough health insurance. Those of us with wealth are held to a higher standard of charitable love that allows others to receive health care.Furthermore, ask the unemployed about congress' extending benefits to all citizens. As bad as his own party disliked Bush, Beck never launched the kind of attacks on him as it does on President Obama. If this country becomes buried alive in home grown terrorism, a la Timothy McVeigh, Glenn Beck his peers who knowingly lie and distort the facts, will bear direct responsibility for fomenting all manner of hatred.I love America and used my medical skills on active duty caring for our true heroes their families. This administration inherited Bush-Cheney-Rove's financial military mess on a global scale. In just 9 months things are turning around. When a year passes, I will bet on improvements and a beginning turn around of all our distress.Americans need to rise above petty longheld differences, accept reality, and get the facts before we all become a nation of liars. There is a saying that rings true here: We may have come over on different ships, but we're all in the same boat now.Isn't it enough that the middle East terrorists want to annihilate us, why is Beck trying to destroy us from within?BY Sara on 09/30/2009 at 18:19
Hmmmmm Married to Eric Zimmermann Sara maybe HMMM?—Go Glenn we're with Ya!BY Steve on 09/30/2009 at 18:40
Hey Sarah, This administration has done more damage in six months than Bush did in 8 years. Put a lid on the "I'm a Conservative" crap. Your a RINO…we have a country to save…put your head back in the sand.BY Will Sass U on 09/30/2009 at 18:45

Drudge Report
"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »
Red State
Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »
The Washington Independent
Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »

John Aravosis points out that Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) has dropped most of his unprecedented blanket hold on most of the White House's nominees -- except a few defense posts, which remain tied up as Shelby seeks two lucrative military contracts for his home state. Later, Aravosis reports that the Department of Health and Human Services has opened an investigation into the California Blue Cross health insurance program, following reports that premiums there have increased 39 percent recently.… Read More »

Also, gues blogger Ralph Reed offers his thoughts on former Gov. Sarah Palin's national political aspirations.
