Glenn Beck open to 'near beer' summit with Obama

By Michael O'Brien - 10/06/09 01:41 PM ET

Controversial Fox News host Glenn Beck is open to a "beer summit" with President Barack Obama -- though Beck's not sure the president would get anything out of it.

Beck told Christopher Ruddy, the CEO of the conservative Newsmax magazine, that he'd accept an invitation to the White House if Obama extended one.

"I respect the president of the United States," Beck said in response to whether he'd attend a "near beer" summit (as a Mormon, Beck doesn't consume alcohol).

"I would go because I was asked by the president of the United States," the host said.

Beck asserted that he had too much respect for the office of the presidency to turn down any such invitation, though he cautioned that Obama would very likely get nothing "meaningful" out of a meeting between the two.

"Do I think we would have a meaningful conversation?" Beck told Ruddy. "I know I would because I would speak directly, but I don't believe he necessarily would. I don't know of many politicians who speak very directly."

Michael: Can I ask why you feel it necessary to place "controversial" ahead of Glenn Beck's name? And might I also ask why it was important for you to label him as a Mormon as the excuse to not drink alcohol? Is it impossible for journalists to simply report a story anymore without embellishment? Dont you think that it's a possibility that Beck doesnt drink because of a myriad of other reasons—-like realizing he was an alcoholic and destroying his family?? Your style of writing is strikingly similar to that of others. Look at Rush Limbaugh, for example, in today's headlines. He is in negotiations to buy part of the Rams football team. But AP's Jim Salter couldnt resist writing, "In 2003, Limbaugh worked briefly on ESPN's NFL pregame show, but resigned after saying Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was overrated because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed. "My question for you is why bring up past struggles, and throw out unnecessary adjectives? Why not just write the story? Do you throw out the same kind of material when reporting on a liberal/progressive?BY Sean Loughry on 10/06/2009 at 15:32

A third party could be invited to the 'near beer' summit meeting——Jimmy Carter. Carter could enlighten the president and Glenn on all things racist and middle eastern, and jewish. He could relate stories about when he was on the school board in Plains, and how education progressed under his watch. Carter might decline such an interview though. Glenn is a Mormon you know.BY Ron Miller on 10/06/2009 at 15:51

Why should the the President of the United States bother with a "man" that has proven his contempt for all things Obama? Beck represents a small sliver of society… 2% of the US population that are largely ignorant of any real facts and incapable of intellectual discourse. Here is one fact none of you can refute… President Obama won in a landslide and Bush never won the popular vote. You keep crying revolution, but you don't get it… It already happened and we won. Isn't that revolting?BY Ken on 10/08/2009 at 09:53

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »
Red State
Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »
The Washington Independent
Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »

John Aravosis points out that Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) has dropped most of his unprecedented blanket hold on most of the White House's nominees -- except a few defense posts, which remain tied up as Shelby seeks two lucrative military contracts for his home state. Later, Aravosis reports that the Department of Health and Human Services has opened an investigation into the California Blue Cross health insurance program, following reports that premiums there have increased 39 percent recently.… Read More »
