DeLay has 'no idea' if Obama is a citizen

By Eric Zimmermann - 10/07/09 01:39 PM ET

Former Majority Leader and current dancing phenom Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) says he has "no idea" if President Obama is a citizen.

Speaking to Newsweek on the heels of his decision to withdraw from "Dancing With The Stars," DeLay defended his earlier comments on the matter and reiterated his uncertainy of Obama's citizenship.

You got into some trouble for saying on TV that you weren't sure President Obama was born in the United States.
What I said was, to answer a question from Chris Matthews, I said: "Why wouldn't the president of the United States show the American people his birth certificate?" You have to show a birth certificate to play Little League baseball. It's a question that should be answered. It's in the Constitution that you have to be a natural-born citizen of the United States to be president.

Do you think he isn't a citizen?
I have no idea.

For the record, see here, here, and here for proof that Obama is, in fact, a citizen.

I feel really sorry for those kids in Hawaii. The Certification of Live Birth like the one Obama has shown has been the only form of Birth Certificate issued by the Department of Health since 2001.No one born since then is going to be able to play in Little League!BY BigGuy on 10/07/2009 at 15:07
Obama is a natural-born citizen under the law and to members of Congress that's all that should matter. After all, the Senate passed a resolution essentially declaring John McCain was eligible to be declared a natural born citizen. If there was any doubt that Obama wasn't a natural born citizen, then the Senate could have acted there as well. They didn't because under the law, Hawaii officials had adequate proof that Obama was a natural born citizen. PS: We are above all a nation of laws, and any member of Congress that doesn't believe in the rule of law has no right to serve in office.BY Chris Baker on 10/07/2009 at 15:36
A Certificate of Live Birth is not proof of place of birth. It can be issued to anyone to prove live birth when the person cannot otherwise provide a Birth Certificate. Obama has refused and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to hide his original Birth Certificate and has yet to release his college transcripts. The simple question is: Why? If he has a Birth Certificate, if he has college transcripts, why hide them and keep a team of lawyers busy keeping them hidden from view? Does anyone really doubt that a conservative would NEVER be allowed to get away with such outright deception?BY MadDogVAQ33 on 10/07/2009 at 16:47
Obama should shoot straight with the American people and provide the birth cetificate that is requested of him. If he has nothing to hide, then what is the issue here? I really believe we will soon find out who this person really is and so far I think that he is a liar and commander in thief. He has no business running our country and I have this tingling feeling up my leg that the likes of Acorn was responsible for voting (fraud) him in. Something reeks here and the only transparency I have seen from this Obama is chicago thuggery——-ugh…enough alreaday…BY Perpicacious on 10/07/2009 at 16:47
Hey Chris: About your…PS:We are above all a nation of laws, and any member of Congress that doesn't believe in the rule of law has no right to serve in office.I guess you also believe Charlie Rangel has always followed our "rule of law" also!!! So why didn't his Dem buddies suspend him from his powerful "ways and means"?BY Susan J. on 10/07/2009 at 16:55
This whole stupid mess about the birth certificate could have been avoided way before the election was held. Months before, Obama and his team refused to produce it or kept putting off handing it over. That is what caused all the mystery. If they had not done this we would not still be hearing about it a year later. It's a requirement for election and he should have been stopped in his tracks and not allowed to progress any further as a candidate until he produced it.BY P on 10/07/2009 at 17:02
MadDogVAQ33 — "A Certificate of Live Birth is not proof of place of birth." Yes, it certainly is. "Certifications of Live Birth … are official government records documenting an individual’s birth." hawaii.gov/dhhl/applicants/appforms/applyhhlBY Doubtful on 10/07/2009 at 17:04
It really doesn't matter because every which way he and his buddies can ruin the constitution, it's being done. So, who even cares anymore? He's ruined a 233 year old country that was the envy of the world. That's why they didn't like us. Now, they really won't like us, because they can't depend on us anymore. It's like losing Dad. A really helpless sadness envelopes us, life goes on, but it will never be the same. Obama wasn't born-he descended upon us from the Heavens, remember. MMM MMM MMMBY Jackson on 10/07/2009 at 17:19
I think it's a question we all should ask. I'm sure Obama was born in Hawaii. But why does he refuse to produce a long form Brith Cert.? Jihn McCain had to. So, if he really was born in Hawaii, why has he spent over a million bucks to keep his records sealed? Maybe it has nothing to do with his birth? Maybe it really has to do with other records he doesn't want to reveal. Such as passports, school records, college records, college theseis, ect. It is clear he is hiding something…but what?BY Donna on 10/07/2009 at 17:53
A lot of people are unhappy and bitter with their lives and like to blame the government for everything that is wrong with them and watch FOKKKx "News" and Msnbc and dont focus on their lives and try to make it better. What does the birth certificate have to do with the problems the country is going thru. it is this racist birther nonsense that makes the world laugh at the US. People should focus on their own problems and lives and stop creating this government as bogeyman crap.BY dave  on 10/07/2009 at 18:11

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »

John Aravosis points out that Sen. Later, Aravosis reports that the Department of Health and Human Services has opened an investigation into the California Blue Cross health insurance program, following reports that premiums there have increased 39 percent recently.… Read More »
