Paterson begs off rumored run at Rangel's seat
It was a nice rumor while it lasted.
Talk perked up in recent days that New York Gov. David Paterson (D) might be given a graceful way to leave his current post by running for Rep. Charles Rangel's (D-N.Y.) House seat -- provided the Ways and Means Committee chairman succumbed to some ethical questions and retired.
It made sense, given that the White House has suggesed Paterson not run for governor in 2010.
But Paterson offered an incredulous response when the switcheroo was suggested to him Wednesday.
The exchange, from the New York Daily News's Liz Benjamin:
Paterson: "What position?"
Shifrel: "Representing Harlem in Congress."
Paterson: "You must be kidding."
