Paul, Grayson want Senate to delay Bernanke confirmation

By Eric Zimmermann - 10/07/09 05:02 PM ET

Reps. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) and Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) are asking the Senate to delay confirming Ben Bernanke as Fed chairman for a second term.

The two populist-minded lawmakers want the Federal Reserve to make itself more transparent, releasing documents and shedding sunlight on what can be a somewhat opaque organization.

"Without such an understanding it is impossible to know whether Chairman Bernanke is fit to serve another term and fulfill the Federal Reserve's dual mandate to ensure price stbaility and full employment," the two wrote in a letter to Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd (D-Conn.)

Specifically, the two lawmakers are demanding documentation about the Bear Stearns rescue package; information on which companies received $1.2 trillion in reserve funds; all documentation provided to New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo for his investigation of the Bank of America-Merill Lynch deal; transcripts of meeting minutes; and all off-balance sheet transactions over the last three years.

Perhaps more interesting than the letter is the strange combination of authors. Paul is an ardent libertarian, while Grayson is a strident liberal. Both have been critical of the Federal Reserve from their respective ideological positions.

Don't confuse liberal with the left. Grayson is a progressive lefty. Not a neoliberal. Ideologically he's closer to a Pat Buchanan Conservative than the New Democrats in the Dem Party.BY Kmansfield on 10/07/2009 at 18:42
This is a very interesting development. If the libertarian right and the populist left ever get together, it could signal some unusual institutional challenges for the establishment. That said, it's hard to deny the basic logic of what they are asking for.BY Joe on 10/07/2009 at 18:46
Grayson has no ideology or principles. He has only himself. This is the most self-absorbed member of the House. Be very frightened!BY Florida Voter on 10/08/2009 at 03:29

I have to agree with Ron Paul, and suggest that we not only delay it, but have forensic accounting of the GOA. I for one would like to see where my dolaars have been spent and where the corruption is buried! But watch this get tabled like Charlie Rangles little money laundering scheme. Ron Paul is a true American.BY TadViv on 10/08/2009 at 23:45
Transparency, transparency, transparency!Wh ere is it? What's become of it? Why is it nowhere to be found outside of weightless, evaporating platitudes? What happened to the repeated, drum-beat-like, "take-it-to-the-bank, cross-my-heart, scout's honor, on-my-mother's-grave and hope-to-die" pre-election promises of unprecedented levels of it???Why is it not a vigorously pursued, if not already a fully-implemented and automatic part of the full spectrum of American national governance? (Various military and security issues not withstanding, obviously.)This is the most opaque, paranoid and unaccountable administration and congress in history of the United States of America. It is also the most self-absorbed, self-centered and power hungry ever. But of course, when our alleged leadership would be faced with a full-scale "Second American Revolution" should "We the People" actually discover (and then appreciate) the extraordinary dangers they are placing our country in, it would have to be, wouldn't it.BY Daneil on 10/09/2009 at 17:48

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »

John Aravosis points out that Sen.
