Boehner pledges GOP will continue to pursue Rangel

By Michael O'Brien - 10/08/09 11:51 AM ET

Republicans won't relent in pushing Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) to step down from his powerful chairmanship, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) vowed Thursday.

A day after most Democrats (and some Republicans) voted to shuffle off a resolution that would have forced Rangel to step down as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Boehner said Republicans would continue to pursue the issue, while holding themselves to a high ethical standard.

"The move by House Democrats to simply refer the resolution to the Ethics Committee was an effort to sidestep the issue and make it easier for them to keep their members in line," Boehner told reporters at his weekly press conference. "But it certainly doesn't solve the problem of Mr. Rangel continuing in his post with these serious allegations, many of which he's admitted to, hanging out there."

Rangel has been accused of not accurately reporting income to the IRS while serving as chairman of that committee, which is in charge of writing the nation's tax laws.

"I'm just going to tell you, this issue is not going to go away," Boehner said. "When I took control as the Republican leader in the beginning of '07, I made it clear that I was going to hold our members to a higher standard; that it was critically important for us to begin the process of rebuilding trust."

That marks a recognition of the Republicans' own ethical difficulties when they lost control of Congress in the 2006 midterm elections, plagued in part due to ties to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Boehner gave no immediate hint as to how Republicans will be able to pursue Rangel beyond the Ethics committee, where the resolution on forcing Rangel to step aside will now be debated.

So, is he also going to insist on investigating ENSIGN?Oh and then there is this…5 Jan 2006 // U.S. Congressman John Boehner of Ohio received $32,500 in political contributions from Indian tribes represented by fallen lobbyist Jack Abramoff, placing him in the top tier of lawmakers who got donations from the lobbyist or his clients.http://www.citizensforethi cs.org/node/23483What a guy.BY wondering..... on 10/08/2009 at 13:36
the next 'clan' ralley… what r u 6?dems and pubs are both riddled like swiss cheese.so 'richard' ask yourself this.why am I bitching - did I do anything other than blog lately? Here in detroit the press whines about 'how corrupt the politicians are, they gave cover story coverage of a marital spat last week for a sports 'star'. One reporter whined about TIMES chosen detroit leaders to do a story on - there was no black male.I asked why TIME and not her PAPER was doing the story…It's easy to complain about one side or another - but what did we do to 'change' it to NOT elect a crook again? And did we PUNISH the CRIMINALS when they did break the law or slap their hand ensuring someone else will repeat the offense at a later date.Complain if you want but I have found 80% of everyone's problems begin an end in the mirror - and you can quote me on that!BY gregg on 10/08/2009 at 14:19
Lets see—-corrupt Democrat in charge of the tax writing committee. This is delicious. The Republicans need to keep this guy around. Great ad copy for the next election cycle.BY Citizen Ray on 10/08/2009 at 14:38
Repub or Dem should not matter this guy should go.RICHARD: What are you smoking? It does not matter what accusations are brought forward because both of our parties have resorted to digging up dirt. What matters is that Rangel has ommitted some information and admitted to much. With that he should step down. Don't throw out any sexual crap. I can't stand Clinton but since it was personal for him it is personal for Ensign, etc. Please quit being defensive. GET RANGEL OUT!BY Davis Bare on 10/08/2009 at 14:38
CON gress says it all. We need to clean out the CON ARTISTS, insist on term limits, and the elimination of all pork, earmarks, and graft (or whatever you want to call corruption). Also we need to make certain the new people can read and listen!BY rank on 10/08/2009 at 14:42
Richard, we are tired and done with children like you. Please let us know when you are going to be intellectually honest, virtually impossible for a lib, because they wouldn't be libs anymore. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.BY BRANTMN on 10/08/2009 at 14:51

Many of our so-called Leaders are ethically challenged in one way or another. It's now been revealed that Kennedy had personal relations with over 1,000 women, seducing even his friends' wives, a definite moral lapse. If these kind of people continue to be elected, we have only ourselves to blame. Our elected officials must be held to a high standard and that means they should be punished in the same way any other citizen in this country would if they had committed the same deed. If it's a crime to be a tax cheat for us for which we'd be seriously fined or imprisoned, the standard needs to be the same for them.BY Ideal Mom on 10/08/2009 at 15:00

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »
