'You lie' nets Rep. Wilson $2.7 million in third quarter

By Aaron Blake - 10/08/09 02:49 PM ET

Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) has turned his "You Lie" outburst into what is likely to be the biggest third-quarter fundraising report in the House.

Wilson announced Thursday that his campaign raised $2.7 million in the third quarter and had $2.6 million cash on hand. That amount of money is more than twice as much as Wilson spent in his entire 2008 reelection race.

"More than 50,000 Americans have extended their steadfast support to me in recent weeks," Wilson said in a statement. "It has been a humbling honor to have this support from my constituents and the American people."

The man he faces a rematch with, Democrat Rob Miller, was also raising money at a feverish pace after Wilson's outburst. But he has yet to release his third-quarter totals.

Take a hint, GOP. The American people want leadership with guts and strength of character to stand up to the lies, destruction and dismantling that has been leveled at this great country. Get strong and get brave, GOP! Stand up like men! Show us you can be trusted! Get some constitutional principles about you and stand on them without wavering. Joe Wilson was an example. Call it like it is and don't cower.BY Regina on 10/08/2009 at 16:28

I hope a real patriot like Rob Miller replaces this clown. http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2009/sep/09/joe-wilson/joe-wilson-south-carolina-said-obama-lied-he-didnt/BY Jeff on 10/08/2009 at 18:31
It takes a person with nothing to hide to call out another person. The reason why so many of our rep's don't call it like they see if is because they have something to hide. I would like to see just one of them give a speech like Daniel Hannan in Great Britian did. That was an stand up and cheer speech. Where are are real men?BY karen zachary on 10/08/2009 at 18:45

Check out Detroit "Obama Supporter" saying she does not know where her 3000.00 comes from but she thinks it is "From" Obama..not US hard working (Lucky) Conservatives! When the Welfare Checks stop Detroit will go up in FLAMES ala Watts! Thanks Obama.. you have created a True Racist Monsters! Your SUPPORTERS!BY Steve on 10/08/2009 at 19:09
Wilson represents all that is wrong in the House of Reps… I guess there are a lot of uneducated people out there, huh?BY Tom on 10/09/2009 at 09:19
Michael Steele, please take notice of the money that Wilson is raising…with NO help from you! This is why I don't give money to the GOP! I give my money to grassroots organizations like SARAHPAC, etc. Get with it Steele! Have a backbone that measures up to your last name!BY Michael on 10/11/2009 at 16:54
Regardless of what Wilson yelled, how much money was raised or where he stands now… what his did was disgraceful to the entire United States. We only have one place that we can all mutually respect and keep sacred, and that is the floor of Congress. He could have gone on every single News outlet that night and screamed "you lie," all he wanted.. for him to do it there in front of the nation was a disgrace. And for the people who commend that action, you are equally shameful. He should be asked to resign not be called an "American Hero." Anyone who thinks that is as pathetic as the Cowardly Joe Wilson.BY kayamonfrez on 10/12/2009 at 16:04
@Michael .. All the right does is complain about wasteful spending… Please keep giving your money to SARAHPAC.. hahah… Hilarious. What a loser.BY kayamonfrez on 10/12/2009 at 16:13

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »

John Aravosis points out that Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) has dropped most of his unprecedented blanket hold on most of the White House's nominees -- except a few defense posts, which remain tied up as Shelby seeks two lucrative military contracts for his home state. Later, Aravosis reports that the Department of Health and Human Services has opened an investigation into the California Blue Cross health insurance program, following reports that premiums there have increased 39 percent recently.… Read More »
