Skelton red-faced over blue language directed at colleague on House floor

By Michael O'Brien - 10/10/09 01:39 PM ET

The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee is finding himself in a bit of hot water after directing an expletive at a colleague on the House floor.

Rep. Ike Skelton (D-Mo.), the chairman of that committee, told fellow Missouri Rep. Todd Akin (R) to "stick it up your a**" during a debate during the defense authorization bill, the Kansas City Star reported.

The confrontation reportedly had to do with the hate crimes amendment included within the bill, a provision which many Republican lawmakers had protested.

Skelton later apologized for the heated exchange.

"In the heat of the moment, unfortunate things are said,” Skelton told the Star.

Maybe Skelton was just demonstrating what a 'Hate Crime' looks like?BY Jim on 10/10/2009 at 15:54
While Democrats are distracted with legislation serving their special interests, Republicans need to focus more on economic issues.BY Chris Baker on 10/10/2009 at 17:25
they should follow aike's advice with all pending legislation and then ALL resign.BY bob miller on 10/10/2009 at 17:28
Great exercise in civility, Mr. Skelton. You have about as much class as Howard Stern. No, actually less. My apologies to Howard Stern. Next time your Comrade Democrats talk about civility in discourse, maybe you should be the poster child for how to do it.BY Bob on 10/10/2009 at 18:09
I am an independent and I think it's a disgrace to see this kind of language from one of our representatives . What are they teaching our children?BY Evelyn on 10/10/2009 at 18:15
One more case of the "kettle" calling the "pot" black!!!And these are our "elected" officials, eh?Sound more like a couple of kids after school!!What ever became of the fine 'ol habit of DUELING??That should change some attitudes up there, eh?As for this bill…it deserves to be DEFEATED at once and forced back into the ssytem for a redo… There is no reason for such HATE crimes ANYTHINGS to be in this funding for our troops!! Besides, this is a THOUGHT POLICE CONTROL type ammendment/bill that couldn't pass on it's own due to FEAR of what WE THE PEOPLE would say to them at home! It is a wrong bill/ammendment anyway, by itself…anyone voting for it should be locked in stocks' infront of the Capital Dome and tomatoes should be provided free for our use!BY MontanaMEL on 10/10/2009 at 18:32
Maybe Skelton was coming out of the closet himself?BY Jim on 10/10/2009 at 21:06
Mr. Skelton is usually polite and courteous. I only wish he had said it to John Boehner, a true hypocrite.BY Charles D. on 10/10/2009 at 21:13
Charles D is right. Ike Skelton is well thought of on both sides of the aisle and he was just frustrated with Republican partisan behavior. The Republicans may talk a good game of bipartisanship but their actions speak differently. There are a few exceptions but Todd Akin isn't one of them.BY Jason Platt on 10/10/2009 at 22:04
Hasn't he supported IRA fighters(others call them terrorists) from Ireland when they come to Kansas city for dinners and fundraising?.Some catholic priests in Missouri may know all about it. He has to go, he has been there like a perennial.BY Ranchera on 10/10/2009 at 22:30

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »

John Aravosis points out that Sen. Later, Aravosis reports that the Department of Health and Human Services has opened an investigation into the California Blue Cross health insurance program, following reports that premiums there have increased 39 percent recently.… Read More »
