Hendersonville mayor to challenge Rep. Shuler
Republicans have a candidate to face Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) in 2010, and it's Hendersonville Mayor Greg Newman.
Newman annnounced his intentions Monday, just days after businessman Jeff Miller announced he would not challenge Shuler.
Shuler won 62 percent of the vote in 2008 against an opponent who was easily one of the most colorful in the nation's 435 congressional races -- Asheville City Councilman Carl Mumpower. The incumbent is in his second term after defeating Rep. Charles Taylor (R-N.C.) in 2006. He has already built a $1 million war chest.
Newman has been mayor since 2005 and was an attorney for 20 years before that.
