Simmons raises $970K in third quarter for Dodd challenge

By Aaron Blake - 10/13/09 10:00 AM ET

Former Rep. Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) raised nearly $1 million in the third quarter for his campaign against Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), according to a campaign source.

Simmons’s $970,000 take is an improvement over his second-quarter haul of $750,000, and hovering around the $1 million-per-quarter mark is about where a top Senate challenger should be in the off-year, depending on the state. It remains to be seen how much of that money will be depleted in a primary, though, where Simmons is the front-runner but his nomination isn’t a foregone conclusion.

Simmons faces a crowded GOP field full of moneyed opponents, including former WWE Chairwoman Linda McMahon, former George W. Bush fundraiser and Ireland Ambassador Tom Foley and investment banker Peter Schiff, who has raised more than $1 million.

Foley raised a meager $280,000 in the third quarter after a $530,000 second quarter, but he plugged in $500,000 of his own money and now has more than $1 million on hand.

Simmons has nearly $1.1 million on hand.

McMahon hasn’t released her figures, though she has already started an advertising blitz and could have tens of millions in personal funds to spend on the race.

This is excellent news for the Congressman and terrible news for Sen. Dodd. People in Connecticut are tired of Sen. Dodd's failed leadership with his heavy role in the economic collapse someone like Rob Simmons is just the type of man Connecticut needs in the Senate.BY Andrew on 10/13/2009 at 12:15

I think this race is far from certain for Simmons. There are two better suited candidates for this senate seat in Peter Schiff and Linda McMahon. Schiff and McMahon both have the necessary background in economics to "educate" the lost career politicians in the United States Senate.BY Philip Witacker on 10/13/2009 at 15:48
I'm glad to see others are aware of the "non-establishment candidates"; Peter Schiff is far more qualified to be in the Senate than Dodd, Simmons or Foley.I can't speak about McMahon, except to say that on the surface it seems silly; but hey, we've had the Governator, so who knows?BY No1TrainedChimp on 10/13/2009 at 16:22
Anyone who's in politics, is NOT who's needed right now. We need people who understand business and proper money management. My money is on Linda, a fresh face to the game.BY Steve on 10/13/2009 at 16:33
Go Linda McMahon!! A fresh face that has not been corrupted. Linda is not interested in special interests. She will not accept more than a $100 dollar donation from anyone. That is the most important statement I have read to date. Help by going to the dumpdodd website. I can hardly wait for 2010 elections!!BY Pat Wright on 10/13/2009 at 16:46
NO1TRAINEDCHIMP, you are exactly right, Schiff is the man.BY MIKE on 10/13/2009 at 22:42
Connecticut voters will have a clear choice in the GOP candidate who ultimately carries the party banner into the 2010 Senatorial election. Schiff would try and out-ego Dodd, which doesen't serve Connecticut, McMahon is trying to parley good old American greed into purchasing a Senate seat, Foley is a good man but public service doesn't seem to fit him no matter how hard you twist the fabric, Caligeri is fresh and full of bravado, while Simmons has a track record of getgting things done regarding government and business and the needs of citizens. The party can ill-afford a primary, so this needs to be setteled at the convention-BY Bob on 10/14/2009 at 06:44
