Dem in California special election attacks wrong opponent
California Lt. Gov. John Garamendi’s (D) special election campaign is attacking the wrong David Harmer.
A Garamendi mailer passed along by GOP nominee David Harmer’s campaign attacks Harmer by saying he “supports off shoring jobs.”
The problem is, the David Harmer it cites isn’t the same David Harmer who is running for Congress.
The citation refers to a Deseret News article from 2004, which quotes a David Harmer who is executive director of the state’s Department of Community and Economic Development.
The David Harmer running for Congress says that’s not him, and that he wasn’t living in Utah at the time.
"Garamendi has mailed a completely false and inaccurate charge against David Harmer, and we demand he immediately apologize and retract his smear attack,” Harmer campaign manager Mike Caporusso said.
Garamendi’s campaign said the mistake doesn’t change its message.
“The bottom line is that David Harmer’s positions are just out of touch with the people of the 10th congressional district,” spokesman Josh Franco said.
The two candidates are battling for former Rep. Ellen Tauscher’s (D-Calif.) seat. A recent Harmer poll had him within seven points, but Garamendi is a heavy favorite.
