Conyers blasts GOP lawmakers' accusations of Muslim 'spies'

By Michael O'Brien - 10/15/09 03:11 PM ET

Muslim-American interns who have served in Congress should be respected, and not subject to questions about their patriotism, House Judciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.) said Thursday.

Responding to allegations from Republican lawmakers that the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) sought to plant Muslim "spies" in the Capitol, Conyers issued a scathing statement on his colleagues' accusations.

"It shouldn't need to be said in 2009, and after the historic election of our first African-American president, but let me remind all my colleagues that patriotic Americans of all races, religions, and beliefs have the right - and the responsibility - to participate in our political process, including by volunteering to work in Congressional offices," Conyers said.

"Numerous Muslim-American interns have served the House ably and they deserve our appreciation and respect, not attacks on their character or patriotism," the veteran lawmaker added.

Conyers's district includes the city of Dearborn, Mich., a city known for having one of the largest concentrations of Arab and Muslim citizens in the U.S.

Its good to see intelligent congressmen like Conyers speaking out against this nonsense. Interns sitting in on PUBLIC meetings and taking notes and reporting back their notes is spying? This is ridiculous http://davegaubatz4america.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html Why dont these 4 congress people do their research on the authors of their book and see how unreliable, biased, and racist their previous work has been http://mediamattersaction.org/factcheck/200910150008 Like the coauthor calling for the contamination through pigs blood of the water in Afghanistan. I couldn't make that up, check it out. This whole thing is laughable, is this what we can expect in the great 2010 return of the GOP, more laughable fear mongering?BY FAIR MINDED on 10/15/2009 at 17:03
It's not about "Muslim" interns working on Capitol Hill - it is all about interns that CAIR got into Capitol Hill.CAIR does NOT equal "Muslims"CAIR equals HamasCAIR is an FBI identified front group created for HAMAS - a terrorist group.Anyone involved with CAIR that is in our government is a dangerous breach of security and should be highly scrutinized.BY dre on 10/15/2009 at 17:33
Consider the source of those claims, David GaubatzThis is taken from his web site, which once contained the following white supremacist language as part of its mission statement: “America is a unique people bound together through a commitment to America’s Judeo-Christian moral foundation and to an enduring faith and trust in G-d and in His Providence…Amer ica was the handiwork of faithful Christians, mostly men, and almost entirely white, who ventured from Europe to create a nation in their image of a country existing as free men under God.”Other articles on the SANE website (which he belonged to) made other racist statements that questioned the right of African-Americans and women to vote: “There is a reason the founding fathers did not give women or black slaves the right to vote,’ and ‘Race matters and affects your intelligence. Jews are the smartest white people around. Orientals smarter than Whites. Latinos next. Then Blacks.” read more:http://dawudwalid.wordpress.com/2009/10/14/who-is-dave-gaubatz/BY Pat on 10/15/2009 at 18:06
CAIR will attack the authors and not even mention the evidence - damning evidence including FBI wiretaps that snared the founders of CAIR - Nihad Awad and Omar Ahmad - at a secret Muslim Brotherhood meeting in Philadelphia for Hamas members and supporters where the idea to create CAIR was born. The authors, Gaubatz and Sperry will have to endure personal attacks while the evidence they gathered (12,000 documents and 300 hours of video tape) will be left out of the discussion. No matter, our eyes are open to CAIR, who pervert the Islamic religion and use Muslims for CAIR's own PR gain, not to help muslims.BY tim on 10/15/2009 at 18:14
(All the evidence you need that proves CAIR was created for the Hamas terrorist group and why anyone involved with CAIR has no business near government officials) The Council on American-Islamic Relations Created For Hamas: Federal Bureau of Investigation recorded evidence places CAIR founders Omar Ahmad and Nihad Awad at a Philadelphia meeting of the radical Muslim Brotherhood's "Palestine Committee". According to the FBI, "all attendees of this meeting are Hamas members or sympathizers." (http://www.anti-cair-net.org/FBItiesCAIRHamas)BY Tim on 10/15/2009 at 18:25
Tim, your comments are disguting. So what are you saying? Are you acusing the FBI of being in bed with CAIR. You are a moron and a bigot because you are fabricating crap.BY Imad on 10/15/2009 at 19:04
THE HORROR: Here is a bit of Paul Sperry's "Pigs Blood" comments (On dealing with our "superstitious" Taliban ENEMY which he called "Islamic fanatics") — "Pig-fat products are on the list of items Afghanistan's ruling Taliban militia has declared to be against the sharia, the ruling clerics' interpretation of Islamic law…So, you see, pigs are to Islamic terrorists – such as Osama bin Laden and his henchmen – what kryptonite is to Superman, or what garlic is to Dracula…Take Mohamed Atta, for example. The suspected ringleader of the Sept. 11 hijackers was so careful not to eat pork fat that he scraped the frosting from cakes. Here was a man more afraid of eating a hint of pork in a dessert than flying a jet full speed into a skyscraper…"BY john on 10/15/2009 at 19:30
Notice that Congressional Reps are NOT targeting "Muslims" as "spies" - they are only concerned over CAIR associated interns… Myrick: “We need to know that information so that we can discern whether we want to take interns associated with that group into our office,” … Broun: “If an organization is connected to or supports terrorists [and] is running influence operations or planting spies in key national security-related offices, I think this needs to be made known,”BY rick on 10/15/2009 at 20:23
"So far, CAIR has not challenged the veracity of the claims in Muslim Mafia. Instead, it has focused on the authors' political backgrounds and minimized the findings…That seems a deliberate attempt to misstate the issue, which is not whether Muslims should be employed on Capitol Hill or anywhere else. It is whether CAIR is an honest and reliable broker for American Muslims. The record, already long and detailed before Muslim Mafia's publication, shows CAIR habitually engages in deception about its activities. The book reinforces that conclusion with internal examples." I thought dipping you bullets in pig fat was the hot ticket.Of course we could dump vats of molten pig fat on terrorist groupings in Afghanistan and see them run.BY Mr.T on 10/15/2009 at 22:35
