Gordon, Dem leaders among Grayson's post-'die quickly' comment donors

By Aaron Blake - 10/15/09 08:55 PM ET

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) raised more than $60,000 the day after his “die quickly” comments on the House floor, including contributions from several members of Democratic leadership and Rep. Bart Gordon (D-Tenn.).

There was only one full day until the end of the quarter, Sept. 30, to raise money after Grayson’s comments Sept. 29, but plenty of lawmakers and political action committees got in on the action.

While most members who gave were leaders or chairmen, Gordon’s name stands out as a member who gave to the liberal firebrand and faces a potentially tough challenge next year in a conservative-leaning district.

Others who gave to Grayson on the 30th include House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), as well as chairmen including Reps. Jim Oberstar (D-Minn.) and Collin Peterson (D-Minn.).

Disney's political action committee (Grayson represents the Orlando area) and AFLAC's PAC were also among the donors.

The notables who contributed to Grayson the day after his “die quickly” comment, according to his third-quarter report, were:

-Rep. Dave Reichert’s (R-Wash.) two-time Democratic opponent, Darcy Burner.
-AFLAC’s political action committee
-AFSCME
-Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.)
-Rep. Bart Gordon (D-Tenn.)
-Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.)
-Disney’s PAC
-Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.)
-Rep. Jim Oberstar (D-Minn.)
-Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.)
-Rep. Jerrold Nadler’s (D-N.Y.) PAC
-Rep. Joseph Crowley’s (D-N.Y.) PAC
-Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.)
-Rep. Collin Peterson (D-Minn.)
-SEIU’s PAC
-Rep. Bill Pascrell’s (D-N.J.) PAC
-Rep. George Miller’s (D-Calif.) PAC
-United Food and Commercial Workers

Alan's political career in Central Florida is, sadly, over. He knows it.BY Orlando Voter on 10/16/2009 at 02:43
Grayson's comment insulted nearly 50% of the entire country. Amazingly enough, there are other Republicans other than only in congress.BY JD Plus on 10/16/2009 at 04:37
Was no one else running in that election? I know people in Florida are way too intelligent to let someone as classless as Grayson represent them. What happened?BY bailedout on 10/16/2009 at 06:35
JD Plus and Bailedout Are just angry and face it (Orlando Voter) you are just soooo wrong, and angry. That Sen.Grason Said what Had to Be Said. This is what I say Hey! Repugs People are Dieing Because Yall wanted to slow the Process Down. Guess What You Can't slow anything down more Than 61 YEARS! ThatBY William Mc Devitt on 10/16/2009 at 07:38
I am not sure his career is over. On the contrary. He insulted 50% of the country saying the truth? 95% of all politicians are scum, just interested on his own profit and corrupted to the bone to the companies that control them. These guy at least has balls to say it. Grayson for president after Obama.BY mike on 10/16/2009 at 08:14
If 50% (I don't know how in the world you came up with this figure) of the country was insulted, they SHOULD be. The truth hurts, doesn't it! If you don't have a problem with your republican representatives being on the payroll of the insurance and drug companies, then you have bigger problems than you know. It is YOUR money they are stealing. If you are truly insulted, call your congressman or senator and tell them this. Or go crawl back under your safe little rock and get raped by the healthcare and drug companies until you die because you were denied insurance coverage or medication.BY Kellydean on 10/16/2009 at 08:14
Curious that the Disney Pac would contribute. Grayson's comments would seem to bother the grandparents who either take or pay for a trip to DisneyWorld, within Grayson;s district. Could it be Grayson represents something other than typical Congressional earmark ability?BY dennis sculimbrene on 10/16/2009 at 08:36
The truth is the dem's have control of all three branches of the government. They too take money from the insurance industry. In fact they take money from all major industries.Kellydean we are and have been had by both parties. There is very little class in the statement that mr. grayson has made. In the ways of the world, it doesn't mean squat.BY PL on 10/16/2009 at 09:16
The content of Grayson's statements made no impact on the willingness of Disney or Aflac's PAC to donate to him. It is common practice for large companies to donate to both politicians in a race (especially in districts that the company is located in) based on the likelihood of their winning. It isn't the content of his speeches that got him corporate donations, it was the perceived increase in his likelihood of reelection following his speeches.BY JM on 10/16/2009 at 09:49
He knows he will not get re-elected and is trying to make a name for himself so that he will get appointed somewhere else. One cannot be too cynical about Grayson.BY New job on 10/16/2009 at 10:17

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »

John Aravosis points out that Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) has dropped most of his unprecedented blanket hold on most of the White House's nominees -- except a few defense posts, which remain tied up as Shelby seeks two lucrative military contracts for his home state. Later, Aravosis reports that the Department of Health and Human Services has opened an investigation into the California Blue Cross health insurance program, following reports that premiums there have increased 39 percent recently.… Read More »
