White House officials on Fox News: 'It's not a news organization'

By Tony Romm - 10/18/09 08:31 AM ET

Two White House officials on Sunday talk shows fired another salvo in the administration's feud with Fox News.

“It’s not a news organization so much as it has a perspective, and that’s a different take," White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel told CNN's "State of the Union." "And more importantly, it’s important not to have the CNN’s and the others of the world being led and following Fox, as if what they’re trying to do is a legitimate news organization."

"It's not really a news organization," White House Senior Adviser David Axelrod said on ABC's' "This Week." "We're going to appear on their shows, we're going to participate, but understanding they have a point of view."

Both Emanuel and Axelrod's lines on Sunday are sure to add fuel to a fire first inflamed by adviser Anita Dunn, who charged last week that Fox was the "communications arm of the Republican Party." It was the second time Dunn rebuked the network in October; previously, she insisted the channel was "opinion journalism masquerading as news."

Fox News, as expected, has reacted equally aggressively to the White House's original comments. Last week, Senior Vice President of News Michael Clemente insisted his channel's audience was able to distinguish fact and opinion on his network.

"The average news consumer can certainly distinguish between the A section of the newspaper and the editorial page, which is what our programming represents," he explained. "So, with all due respect to anyone who still might be confused about the difference between news reporting and vibrant opinion, my suggestion would be to talk about the stories and the facts rather than attack the messenger…which over time, has never worked."

Interestingly enough, Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace said earlier today he invited the president's advisers to his show to discuss the brewing spat. However, he added, the White House declined any interview on the matter.

The W. H is personalizing its attack on Fox News rather than responding to the arguments about issues ranging from unemployment, health car, domestic energy, loss of manufacturing jobs, the war, etc. It is as if they see Fox as a Quisling because they do not report news the way the W. H. wants it reported. It sends the message that the W.H.'s arguments are weak. Rather than make their case they whine, play the victim card, and point fingers. People do not like it. It is a losing strategy. Ask yourself, what has this W.H done, how did they do it, what are the results? That is why they will not go on Fox news.BY graham on 10/18/2009 at 11:14
This one is too easy.Follow the logic, if you oppose this administration in any way you are a threat. They just want everyone to know.In the America I grew up in, this would be a 'call to arms' to the American press that would champion the truth for the American people. In 2009 it is marching orders handed down from their Marxist master that 'they', themselves have placed into power. When this administration built with bricks of Lies and Deceit, mortared by a like minded, complicit Media starts to crumble and it will under it's own weight and corruption, I wonder how many 'journalists' credibility will be destroyed by their complicity in this 'Civil Tyranny'!BY Jim on 10/18/2009 at 11:35
The liberals are used to having it all their own way with the main stream media. They just read off White House faxes for talking points and report it as facts. To suggest that Fox News is not a real news organization is asinine. It's probably more like Fox is the ONLY REAL news organization because it doesn't allow itself to be spoon-fed by the White House and Democrat congressional leaders. But also, consider the source. Rahm Emanuel and David Axelrod are two of the most conniving far-left advisers in Obama's administration. Emanuel is a veteran of Chicago-style political thuggery where opponents aren't debated, they're destroyed.BY Bob on 10/18/2009 at 12:17
Does the White House think that if they say this often enough that the millions that watch FOX will believe them and turn to MSNBC or CNN or ABC? Ha Ha Ha. By the way, none of them said…does the White House think MSNBC and CNN and ABC are news stations? If so then one might draw the conclusion that to the White House propaganda and talking points equate to news.BY tiredofit on 10/18/2009 at 12:20
This administration is so incredibly hyper-partisan. They refuse to debate the issues. Rather, they see the need to continue attacking the opponents. All hail dear leader. We must get in lockstep with maobama!BY J T on 10/18/2009 at 12:26
So does this mean that by claiming that FOX is not a news channel Ramn and the rest of the people that the White House sent out today to appear on all their propaganda channels did not have to explain why another one of Obama's czars (Dunn) is, if not a communist herself, a communist lover? Why didn't anyone ask Ramn what it is exactly that Glenn Beck has said lately that is a lie and present proof that anything he said was a lie? Why do they let the White House get away with slandering people without asking for proof? Officer Crowley learned first hand how Obama works. Crowley never did get an apology from Obama for saying he acted stupidly, however Obama did manage with his words to make it appear that Crowley participated in some racial discrimination. That's all right though because they had their beer summit photo op and all was forgotten that Obama, AFTER admitting he did not have all the facts said the white officer acted stupidly.BY tiredofit on 10/18/2009 at 12:43
So, If I put any credibility in Fox News, does that make me a racist?Just wondering.BY jimmy on 10/18/2009 at 13:08
You can feel the tears dripping off the screen on this one. I, for one, am amused by all this crybaby action.BY anon on 10/18/2009 at 13:18
Fox News sure has gotten all you good ol boys riled up. Too bad that's what they exist for. They'll use whatever "cultural" issue necessary to keep your eye of the economic ball. You're rooting against your own self-interest. You don't care though, you believe this is a football game with a mascot to cheer for. All you want is to win for you and yours. Grow up.BY NG on 10/18/2009 at 13:23
thank heavens for FOX news…news…news. Shame on the WH for whining because FOX is not one of potus's lackeys. Am looking forward to FOX doing a story on Axelrod's new PR office in DC…he's already setting up his new"lobbyist" office for 2012…when he's long gone from the WH.BY pvbeachbum on 10/18/2009 at 13:39

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »
