Club for Growth poll shows their candidate leading in New York

By Aaron Blake - 10/26/09 10:52 AM ET

A new poll by the Club for Growth shows Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman leading the New York special election Monday.

The Basswood Research poll has Hoffman at 31 percent, Democrat Bill Owens at 27 percent and Republican Dede Scozzafava at 20 percent. The Club is supporting Hoffman in the race.

Owens has led the last two public polls on the race, with Hoffman third in both at 23 percent, so this poll represents quite a different (or changing) picture of the race. Hoffman has seen his online donations surge over the last couple of weeks and has gained new traction thanks to big-name Republican endorsements.

The Club's past polling has also differed from other pollsters', including when it had the race as a three-way tie early on.

The Club has not released the full details of the poll.

Hoffman is exactly what this country needs. Someone that is NOT a career politician. Come on NY, lets vote for someone we can believe in. This is REAL change! Our country needs to get as far away for the Reps Dems same old BS as possible!BY JLC on 10/26/2009 at 12:53
If Doug Hoffman loses this special election, it's time for northeast Republicans to consider breaking away from the national party. Doug Hoffman doesn't live in the 23rd district, doesn't vote there, and according the Watertown Daily News (NY) was largely clueless on local issues important to the district. Also the poll's margin of error is almost 6%.BY Chris Baker on 10/26/2009 at 13:38
This is good news. If Mr. Hoffman can win, then I hope the whole mess can be changed overtime. I am tired of lifetime appointments in Washington.BY PL on 10/26/2009 at 14:23
I totally agree with you JLC.BY doreme on 10/26/2009 at 14:24
Dream on, right-wingers…the Hoffmans of the world are going to help keep the GOP on the sidelines for some time to come. You guys make so much noise but you don't represent anything but a frustrated and angry minority. And that won't change with either a win or a loss for this race…the national trends are against you and the GOP "brand" is now held in the lowest regard of the last fifteen or twenty years.BY TaylorB1 on 10/26/2009 at 14:32
The Democrats win no matter what. If Hoffman succeeds, the GOP will nominate more unprepared, extreme rightists in 2010 - and not be able to support them financially as they are Hoffman, leading to further losses as moderate Republicans and Independents leave the party in droves. If Scozzafava wins, the conservative Repulicans will continue to cannibalize the party.BY jjrc on 10/26/2009 at 15:12
TAYLORB1, I guess you haven't seen the latest Gallup poll where 40% consider themselves conservative, 36% consider themselves moderate and only 20% consider themselves liberal. So 76% of America does not want this far left progressive liberal bull that is being crammed down out throats right now. http://www.gallup.com/poll/123854/Conservatives-Maintain-Edge-Top-Ideological-Group.aspx#BY JLC on 10/26/2009 at 16:03
Hey taylorb jjrc, I smell something, I think it's fear.BY BC on 10/26/2009 at 16:03
Hey JLC,I guess you can't do the math that your poll proves that Moderates and Liberals outnumber Conservatives by 60-40. Unless you can appeal to Moderates, you're not going to win any elections; at least not enough to have any real place at the table.BY JLC on 10/26/2009 at 20:27
Even if it is a push poll, so long as it accurately describes the candidates (which it sounds like it does from the ealier posts), then the results should scare the Scozzafava camp. What is even more scary is that even with a large margin of error, Scozzafava is stuck in third. The RNC and NRCC should be embarassed for backing her.BY JB on 10/26/2009 at 20:32
