Gingrich calls GOP support for Hoffman a 'purge'

By Jordan Fabian - 10/27/09 08:47 AM ET

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) late Monday had some choice words for Republicans supporting Conservative Party party candidate Doug Hoffman (N.Y.), accusing them of conducting a "purge" of the GOP.

Many national Republican figures, such as Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-Minn.) and ex-Gov. Sarah Palin (R-Alaska), have backed Hoffman over GOP candidate Dede Scozzafava in the 23rd district's special election this year. The district has been long-held by Republicans, but many conservatives have shied away from Scozzafava for her socially liberal positions and the local GOP's selection process that they say was not transparent.

Gingrich broke the mold and backed Scozzafava, saying her candidacy gave the Republicans the best shot of regaining a congressional majority. The former Speaker faced a push-back from the right after his announcement but he upped the ante on Monday.

"This idea that we're suddenly going to establish litmus tests and all across the country we're going to purge the party of anybody who doesn't agree with us 100 percent; that guarantees Obama's reelection, that guarantees Pelosi as Speaker-for-life," he told Fox News last night.

Gingrich called Scozzafava a "liberal Republican" for her support of gay marriage and abortion rights. But he defended those positions as in-step with her district and her predecessor, former Rep. John McHugh (R-N.Y.), who was tapped to be President Barack Obama's Army Secretary.

But he said that her endorsement from the National Rifle Association, her signing a no tax-increase pledge, and her opposition to cap-and-trade and healthcare reform legislation made her "adquately conservative in an upstate New York district."

Gingrich also attacked Hoffman for not having proper knowledge of local issues and living outside the 23rd district.

"So I say to my many conservative friends who suddenly decided whether they're from Minnesota, or Alaska, or Texas, they know more than the upstate New York Republicans? I don't think so," he added.

"PURGE"?Good. It's about time.In fact it's past time.wkjBY William Johnson on 10/27/2009 at 10:30
Gingrich is a jerk. He's trying to play both sides which makes him out to be a loser. You either want to support America or you don't Gingrich. Get off the pot.BY Harold on 10/27/2009 at 10:43
I'm not sure, but didn't she first refuse to sign a "no tax-increase" pledge? If I remember correctly, she only signed it after she started to lose momentum. Get her to the curb.BY kcsTEAK on 10/27/2009 at 10:58
I get your point Newt, but a liberal republican is still not a Conservative. Our party is not suffering from too many Consevatives, it is suffering from to many centrists and flat out liberals. 'McCain'ism', makes republicans think the left will vote for them if their 'sorta-like' them. The only thing you succeed in doing is 'pissing' off your base and patronizing your political opponent.I don't think it is so much a 'Purge' as it is a 'Colonic'!BY Jim on 10/27/2009 at 11:01
The Republican Party must follow the lead of its only Real American leader, Sarah Palin. Palin For President 2012, if not sooner!BY li ivy on 10/27/2009 at 11:17
The GOP needs to stand up to the get-evengelicals and the Rush dittobots that are ruining the party. The cranks that used to be fringe groups in the GOP in Reagan's era are not running it—-we need Republicans with conservative leanings, not conservatives with Republican leanings. Go Newt!BY m on 10/27/2009 at 11:30
Gingrich thinks "we" are out of step. He has not bothered to accurately read the mood of conservatives across the country. Like many, I will vote Conservative instead of GOP. I am so sick and tired of the "me too" Republicans, trying to out liberal the Democrats.Gingrich is running for the RNC Money. It's not the money from the party that will cast votes, but the disillusioned voters that want truly Coservative candidates. With this issue as a litmus test, Gingrich just doesn't get it. He will not get my support or my vote. I have ceased to financially support the GOP!BY winston on 10/27/2009 at 11:31
I used to think Newt was OK. Now I'm begining to see why everyone is saying he's a RINO. I left the republican party after Bush grew the grew the government, spent like a drunken lib, and wouldn't close the borders. Nominating McCain litterally sent me totown hall to officially declare myself unenrolled. I had thought all the town hall meetings and TEA parties would have woken up the Repubs, but it looks like us teabaggers are gonna be the libs best friends as we will be splitting their oppositions votes between democrat-lite party and conservatives against the democrat candidates. I left the Republican party over people like Bush, McCain, Graham, and I did not vote for McCain in the last election. Even if it means we lose to Obama again I refuse to vote democrat-lite if it comes down to it in 2010 and 2012.BY Pete on 10/27/2009 at 11:31
Gingrich is an idiot. In order to be considered a moderate Republican, wouldn't it be nice if the candidate embraced at least one Republican core belief? Instead she's pro-union, pro-spending and favors federal funding of abortions. It's not like she's being attacked for being pro-gay marriage, which I could care less about. She doesn't embrace anything the Republican party stands for.If one good thing comes out of this disaster it's that we'll see the end of the morally bankrupt idiot Gingrich. Go away you fool.BY SicSemperTyrannis on 10/27/2009 at 11:41
No more Mr. Gingrich, no more. No more compromise and no more listening to Jeb and you and Lindsey and Olympia and Arlen and John McCain, the Georges and any of the rest of you compromisers.BY cathy on 10/27/2009 at 11:43

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »

John Aravosis points out that Sen.
