House bill: $894 billion, cuts deficit by $30 billion
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) will announce today that the House healthcare bill will cost $894 billion over ten years and will cut the deficit by $30 billion, according to Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office.
If true, that means the House bill meets two criteria desired by the White House: that a final bill be deficit neutral and cost less than $900 billion.
House Democrats, however, are reportedly considering additional measures to increase doctor reimbursement and fill gaps in perscription drug coverage. That could bring the cost of the bill closer to $1 trillion.
The CBO will also estimate that the legislation would cover an additional 36 million Americans, leading to an overall coverage rate of 96%.
