DCCC: House GOP's healthcare solutions are 'Halloween trick'

By Tony Romm - 10/30/09 03:44 PM ET

A group of Democrats on Friday compared House Republicans' healthcare platform to a "Halloween trick" and scolded GOP lawmakers for failing to offer "actual solutions" to the country's insurance crisis.

The latest attack from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), mailed to lawmakers in 36 districts this afternoon, arrives just as House Republicans are beginning their own assault on Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) new healthcare bill, which she unveiled earlier this week.

“As a Member of Congress who doesn’t have to worry about the taxpayer-funded health insurance for themselves or their family, it’s easy for Representative Bachmann to just say ‘no’ to health insurance reform and play tricks on her constituents while continuing to put big health insurance companies first,” said Ryan Rudominer, DCCC spokesman, in the letter mailed to Rep. Michele Bachmann's (R-Minn.) district.

“But, the people of Representative Bachmann’s District deserve more than her offering how-to guides for killing health insurance reform ‘without making the Republican Party look bad,’ they deserve actual solutions to spiraling health insurance costs,” he added.

Of course, Republicans too have capitalized on this week's intensified healthcare debate -- and this weekend's Halloween festivities -- to launch a few political jabs. On Tuesday, for example, Texas Rep. Ed Poe (R) charged that Pelosi and House Democrats were putting together "Halloween healthcare." He also joked the federal government would soon go "door-to-door playing trick or treat on seniors by taking their Medicare coverage."

"When they knock, seniors should not answer the door. When they peek through the peephole, the bureaucrats will be dressed as snake oil salesmen because they are cutting Medicare parts A, B, C and D," Poe said. "They are going to try to sell seniors on the new bill which we call Medicare part E, but it doesn't cover one senior citizen. Not one. Just call it Halloween healthcare because it is really scary."

Nevertheless, the House could vote on Pelosi's healthcare bill as early as next Thursday, she has previously said.

The House Bill eviserates Medicare breaking every promise government made to Seniors. So when government takes over the rest of Health Care expect government to break all of the promises Nancy Pelosi made yesterday to the American people. Pelosi promised: — Lower costs, instead expect Higher costs— Higher quality, instead expect Lower quality, — More Choice, instead expect Less Choice— More competition, instead expect Less CompetitionBott om line, it is impossible to provide quality health care for 30 million more people and at the same time lower costs and increase quality. The reality is the opposite will happen and anyone who says otherwise is a liar. Below is a summary of what's in the bill:Total cost: $1.055 trillionNew Taxes: $572 billionCuts to Medicare: $426 billionNot included: $247 billion needed to stop Medicare payments to doctors from decreasing, pledged to be passed in a separate bill to keep this bill “revenue neutral”Pages: 1,990The word regulation appears in the bill 181 times. The word fees appears in the bill 103 times. The word tax appears in the bill 214 times.“As we all know, nothing says ‘affordability’ like higher taxes and fees.”The word “shall” - as in “must” or “required to” - appears over 3,000 times. “The word, alas, is never preceded by the patriotic phrase “mind our own freaking business.” Not once.”From Dow Jones Newswires: “The $1.055 trillion estimate also does not include $245 billion needed to stop Medicare payments to doctors from decreasing, which the House plans to address through separate legislation introduced Thursday. The costs of the bill are fully offset by cuts to existing spending programs– including the Medicare?Advantage and other programs–saving $426 billion through 2019, and by tax increases raising $572 billion over that time, CBO said. In fact, the combined impact of provisions in the bill would be a net deficit reduction of $104 billion in the next decade, according to CBO.”BY mary on 10/30/2009 at 17:06
This Health Care bill is a fraud. In order to get the money below a trillion dollars, the House simply dropped the increase to be paid to Medicare doctors. This would have pushed the bill to approximately 1.1 trillion. The Senate tried to do this, but it was defeated. So, will smoke and mirrows win the day? I sure hope not.BY Charles on 10/30/2009 at 20:51
I;ll give you naysayers this:you are like a broken record.Have you nothing better to say? No wonder only 27% of people polled last week admitted to being Republicans. Get a life.BY richard on 10/31/2009 at 02:22
