Rep. Issa switches from Scozzafava

By Aaron Blake - 10/30/09 05:21 PM ET

Dede Scozzafava is now losing her supporters to Doug Hoffman.

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) is switching his support in the New York special election from the GOP nominee to Conservative Party candidate Hoffman.

A spokesperson said Issa is overnighting Hoffman a $5,000 check from Issa's political action committee.

Issa previously told The Hill that he supported Scozzafava, though he never gave her money. Now that she doesn't appear to have a chance at winning, he is backing Hoffman.

Hoffman, who is polling competitive with Democrat Bill Owens, has said he would caucus with Republicans in Congress.

It will be interesting to see if other Scozzafava backers follow Issa's example in the name of keeping the seat in GOP hands.

The real buffoon is Gingrich. What a dork! At least Issa has the guts to admit he made a mistake. But then again, I've always thought Gingrich to be a loser.BY Kip on 10/30/2009 at 19:43
Gingrich has lost all of my respect. The first opportunity he had to stand on principle he caved. Tootaloo Traitor!BY kringeesmom  on 10/30/2009 at 20:30
Gingrich needs to get a hobby and stop with his big government bloviating.Issa made a serious judgement error, but seems to have not had the vanity issues of the pink piggy who has fatted himself at the public trough for most of his life.Take up golf Newt, maybe you can have Pelosi or Sharpton give you a good word with Obama to get in a couple rounds. You'd make a great caddy.BY Broke inCA on 10/30/2009 at 21:46
Newt has been living in the same "bubble" as many Republican elites. I thought he understood the power of the town halls and Tea Parties. He now has lost credibility with many who have supported him.BY Elwood Baas on 10/30/2009 at 22:49
Anyone who watched Gingririch when he was Speaker knows two things. First, Newt can't shut up espescially when there is a camera. Second, he is a member of the Specter Party - the country needs him because he's Him, what he stands for is secondary.BY SkeptiK on 10/30/2009 at 23:05
Scozzafava could say because the special election had no primary and it is now clear that in a primary she'd have lost to Hoffman, he is the actual Republican candidate.BY Paul Kelly on 10/31/2009 at 00:27
Isn't it true that Hoffman doesn't even live in NY23? Not that carpetbaggers are new to NY politics, I realize that. I too think Newt is a dork, but good gosh, speaking of dorks…Hoffman? Give him a cowlick and he'd look like Alfalfa from the Dead End Kids. Those eyes behind the glasses…I'd think he was on dope if he wasn't a way out conservative. Oh, well conservatives, sometimes you get what you wish for. He'll play well on Fox.BY rt on 10/31/2009 at 01:30
RT, typical lib! Starts comment by throwing dirt, then rather then discussing the issues, trys to make fun of how Hoffman looks. Typical lib!BY 2010 on 10/31/2009 at 02:39
Yeah, RT is totally focused on the superficial. Wha t difference should it make what a candidate looks like?Hoffman's house in 10 miles from the district boundary - not far at all for a rural area. He owns businesses that are in the district and has spent his whole life in that part of NY state.BY Reality Check on 10/31/2009 at 03:13
Beck said last week our next President won't be a slick empty shell like Obama. Instead our next President will uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. We will choose them for their character not their meaningless polished retoric. Newt is a disappointment to me as well. I used to think he would make a great President. Have I changed or has he or maybe its the times in which we live? Like MItt, Huckabee wouldn't endorse Hoffman tonight either. He would only say he doesn't support the Republican, Scozzafava because she doesn't believe in the sanctity of life. Huckabee didn't "get" Obama's agenda for months. I believe Huck told Hannity he was right! What took him so long???Rep. Darrell Issa is a rockstar in my book. He fights corruption wherever he finds it. Two that come to mind are the ACORN investigation and the Countrywide sweetheart deals for Chris Dodd, and others. I love that about him. He has my respect and admiration. I'm happy he is supporting Hoffman with his words and $$$$.BY Babygirl on 10/31/2009 at 07:12
