Pence to Pentagon: Rethink decision to offer H1N1 vaccine to Gitmo detainees

By Tony Romm - 10/31/09 09:20 AM ET

The Pentagon's announcement Friday that it would provide H1N1 vaccinations to Guantanamo Bay detainees who ask for it is a "terrible decision," one House Republican stressed Friday.

The White House should immediately cancel the program to ensure Americans are able to receive those vaccinations first, added Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.).

"I don't know if detainees at Gitmo should never be given the H1N1 vaccine," Pence told CNN during an interview. "But, certainly, at a time of such acute shortages, again, involving American citizens... I think the administration should immediately suspend the plan to deploy H1N1 vaccines to terrorist detainees at Guantanamo Bay, until such a time that sufficient vaccinations are made  available to the American public."

The Pentagon explained on Friday that it was offering the vaccine to detainees only because prison populations are at high risk for spreading the pandemic, which has so far sickened hundreds of thousands at home and abroad. But that rationale hardly satisfied lawmakers from both political parties, who almost immediately questioned why the United States would ship those supplies to Gitmo while U.S. care providers struggled at home to cope with temporary vaccine shortages.

"As long as Americans must wait to receive the vaccine, the detainees in Guantanamo Bay should not be given preferential treatment to receive the H1N1 vaccination," Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) wrote in a letter to Secretary of the Army John McHugh on Friday.

Pence, too, shared Stupak's concerns, but he also used his interview Friday to take a shot at Democrats -- and their handling of other healthcare crises -- in particular.

"I think this is exactly the kind of misadministration of healthcare, this and other aspects of the way this government is responding to the H1N1 virus, that ought to give the American people great pause about this massive government-run insurance plan that's been unveiled this week by House Democrats," Pence said.

First procecute the CIA agents trying to protect us and then divert the H1N1 vaccine to the terrorists. Obama promised us that we could count on change, but did not specify what that change would be. The devil is in the details. What is next, refusing to provide the reinforcements his general requested?BY KerbyTex on 10/31/2009 at 11:29
It is very unfortunate to have members such as Pence and Stupach criticizing they actually know nothing about. The prisoners are the responsibility of the US while in custody. They have not been found guilty of any crime and in fact many have never even been charged. In such circumstance the US must see to their health and safety. It's the law. If these fools that frequent the offices of Congress would use their brains before they open their big mouths it would help rather than hurt America's reputation as a fair and just country. Prisoners crowded together could be the catalyst for an even worse outbreak of the H1N1 so of course they have to be vaccinated as soon as possible.BY Archie1954 on 10/31/2009 at 18:42
Be that as it may, Archie1953, my Pediatrician just ran out of the vacine and does not know when she will receive any more. You think those in a contained area, essentially quarantined, alleged to have attacked Americans, should receive their flu shot before children in this country?BY Andrea on 11/01/2009 at 08:53
For those who voted for OBAMA…what a disgrace that this administration cares more about the detainess at Gitmo than our own citizens. This Presidency is an abomination and complete embaressment. We are so worse off with OBAMA than we were with 8 years of BUSH!!! From healthcare to the two wars to the ever growing rate of unemployment and their constant willingness and need to try and undermine the American publics intellect with false statistics. NOTHING and I mean NOTHING has come from this PRESIDENT… He has absolutely no experience at anything except photo-ops and leading by consensus. Being Preseident requires a person who can think on their own and isn't concerned about winning a popularity contest. The American public was just so desperate for change that they bought into his scam. GITMO or not…BY Fran on 11/01/2009 at 13:44
I am a Marine set to deploy to the Afghan front. I really don't care about whose custody those detainees are in, my 2 children are not getting the vaccination and both are at double risk. Those detainees should be quarantined at the bottom of the hull of a ship, like Marines and sailors get treated while on deployment. The scumbag liberals don't like it, then THEY can take care of them.BY james on 11/02/2009 at 18:55
my question: he really thinks this is ok?? seriously? putting alleged terrorist's well being over american citizens well being? clearly his priorities are what many of us have feared all along. yet he continues to fool the majority.. this is incomprehensibl e. he needs to GO!!!BY stacey on 11/02/2009 at 20:11
Our Children are our most valuable resource, and the most vulnerable. It's mind boggling that anybody in their right mind would ever consider such a ridiculous notion as to place the welfare of terror suspects above our children and the American people. These indivuals are at gitmo for good reason. Does anybody actually believe they would have the same concern for our people if they were in their custody. Not a chance. It's time to wake up and smell the coffee. It's time for the American people to get rid of our leaders that have hidden agendas and vote for the ones who truly care about our people and our country. I don't think this is the change some of you voted for.BY Ed on 11/03/2009 at 03:23
It's outrageous!!! Who the [***] made that decision. As always, our incredibly flawed government (BOTH sides ladies and gentlemen) has plucked up!! I say, boot ALL of them out and start from scratch. I'm a nurse and completely dumbfounded and speechless. Regardless of whether they are being detained by the USA or a prisoner wound up in prison because of his own bad choices, pregnant women and chidlren should be FIRST IN LINE!!!!BY Stacey on 11/03/2009 at 13:03
Our children should be the first in line. Yes those in gitmo may not be convicted yet but how the [***] does any man get preferincal treatment over children. The liberals and modrates need to be booted out of office and I am not sure the conservitives are much better but certenlialy a step up from what I have seen in the last year.BY Walt on 11/03/2009 at 16:07
The President or the SECDEF need to step up to the plate and stop this insanity. Once all Americans have the opportunity to get their H1N1 shots then"maybe" the detainees can get their "shot". Of course, maybe we would look good to the world if the detainees were offered their shot first. I am sure this has been discussed at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Maybe the Pres will administer the shots at GITMO as a Photo OpBY Jack Douglas on 11/03/2009 at 19:23

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. "Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »
