Clinton fails to get Palestinians to return to negotiating table

By Tony Romm - 10/31/09 03:49 PM ET

Palestinian officials on Saturday announced they failed to reach an agreement with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton about another round of Middle East peace talks.

Although Clinton pressed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and his representatives rather hard to return to the negotiating table, his government ultimately declined to resume discussions with Israeli leaders, primarily because of a lingering dispute with Tel Aviv over the nature of its settlements, officials said.

Nevertheless, it would have been a hard sell even for Clinton, who has been in the region for some time now promoting the president's renewed commitment to Middle East peace and international counter-terrorism.

Recently, both Israelis and Palestinians have criticized the Obama administration for backtracking on its previously stated commitment to solving the Israeli-Palestinian crisis -- a diplomatic obstacle Clinton surely faced while there this weekend.

"Obviously, we can't want this more than the parties want it. I mean, that's just the way negotiations are," she told the BBC earlier this week in an interview.

"But the fact that the United States is engaged, and that we are serious about this engagement, is, in and of itself, I think a very positive message," she added.

I'm overlooking a pool below my window at a condo in Miami where I live. The building was built in 1967. I've been living here for 12 years, and every month we residents pay 1000 dollars to use the pool. It seems that whoever sold the building, kept the pool and leases it back to the building. I wonder if I can sell my condo, and lease the bathroom to the buyer. Something is wrong with this; but it is done.BY Edmond on 11/01/2009 at 08:20
Wow it took less than 6 months (June 4 to November 1) for the Obama Administration to go from expressing a willingness to be honest toward the Muslims of the world to being a bend over boy for the Isralies. Pitty the US being run from a foreign land with that much ability to turn an honest man into a male whore. The future doesn't look very bright for the US. Obama was seen as possibly the one honest western adult in a position to bring balance, if not justice, to US relations in the Middle East. That has now been blown out of the water. I doubt if ever again any Muslim will consider any US president capable of resisting the Israeli PACs and neo conish christians. This means that any and all negotiations, assuming any occur, will likely be based on hard milestones with set evaluations. No more double speak or promises. But it isn't like there would ever be peace without justice, and no justice without those that would commit crimes against humanity being punished. Lets all hope that taking someone elses property without their permission will be punished as a crime in the future without regard to race, religion or other excuse. If not, humanity will always be at war with itself. As you do to the least among me, so also you do to me.BY Charles Jacks on 11/01/2009 at 11:11
