Biden: 'I'm confident we've hit bottom' despite job numbers

By Tony Romm - 11/01/09 10:31 AM ET

As White House officials mobilized to tout new data as evidence of economic growth, Vice President Joe Biden suggested Sunday the country had hit rock botton.

Although the vice president noted stimulus dollars had created or saved hundreds of thousands of jobs this year, Biden stressed it was still a "depression for millions of people" who are struggling to find any work at all.

"Oh, I'm confident we've hit bottom," Biden said in a pre-recorded interview aired on CNN's "State of the Union." "The question -- look, we're not going to be satisfied... until we -- I'm able to sit in front of you and say, look, this month we grew jobs. The net effect is growing jobs."

"It doesn't say a lot to people to say, you know, there would have been a million more, or a 1.6 million more jobs lost, but for this," he added. "My grandpop used to have an expression... He said, when a guy in Dixon City, a suburb, is out of work, it's an economic slowdown; when your brother-in-law is out of work, it's a recession; when you're out of work, it's a depression."

Intentionally or not, Biden's comments this weekend illustrate a serious, intense debate in Washington over the effect of federal rescue dollars. On one hand, the Obama administration insists this year's 3.5 percent GDP growth, announced last week, would have been impossible unless the government stepped in to prevent a bigger economic meltdown. However, the White House's critics, mostly Republicans, have routinely charged the stimulus is not doing enough, especially in the realm of job creation.

House Republican Leader John Boehner (Ohio) echoed that argument on Sunday. Appearing after Biden's taped interview, he told host John King that he was not sure whether the country has hit rock bottom, and he stressed the stimulus was without a model for determining how many jobs had been saved or created.

"All I know are the facts. The president said that when he signed the bill that unemployment would not exceed 8 percent. Now we have unemployment nearly 10 percent," he said.

"Three million Americans have lost their jobs since the stimulus was signed into law. And yes, the economy grew last month," he added. "But Americans all around the country continue to ask the question, where are the jobs?"

Biden may want to tell the 7.2 million unemployed and their families along with the people (6.3 million) who have lost their homes we have hit rock bottom. The GDP is reflecting sales of cash for clunkers and 8,000 to first time home buyers. The jobs saved were in bankrupt California, provided with stimulus money that were all will be paying for years to come. Thank you Joe for your words of wisdom..notBY bailedout on 11/01/2009 at 12:35
Biden, 'were confident that you will be remembered forever as being the Vice President of the most Radical, Anti American, Administration that has ever been! I only hope the damage that you have brought upon this Great Nation will not last as long as your reputation for 'Bringing' it!BY Jim on 11/01/2009 at 12:59
Once again, just another attempt from this Adminstration to spin the #'s with fasle stats. Let's see what the Holiday retale Sales #'s reflect…and next months unemployemnt claims. Let's see how many new jobs have been created in the private sector by the end of the next quarter v. government jobs. Let's pull out the #'s for "cash for clunkers" and "the first time home credit purchase" to get the real #'s from this past quarter growths. I am in real estate and I have to tell you in my market place the home credit options has had little to no effect in motivating sales. So, I am glad to hear that it has in other parts of the country…but, oh I forgot I live in NJ…no one wants to pay our property taxes.BY Fran on 11/01/2009 at 13:57

Does anyone believe a word that politicians tell us anymore? How can Obama solve the unemployment rate so fast, he has no magic wand. Many of the good jobs are gone for good and I dont think Biden has the answers on how to create new ones. It will take a long time, Im patient.BY Truebeliever on 11/01/2009 at 21:12
Biden finally said something I agree with. America has hit rock bottom. We couldn't get any lower with the radical, left wing, Mao lovers in the White House. Even a blind hog finds an acorn every once in awhile.BY Brian Goettl on 11/01/2009 at 21:58
Well, Biden has a job for 4 or 8 years. Maybe we have hit rock bottom, but we can start over. I am more positive than you, Brian,BY Truebeliever on 11/01/2009 at 22:20
Biden was talking about economics. I am talking politically and philosophically . Biden is wrong on the economics of it though. Obama and the far left will do to our economy what Mao and Castro did to China's and Cuba's economies.BY Brian Goettl on 11/01/2009 at 22:44

The Corner
The Corner's Mark Krikorian points out in a recent post that the private sector -- namely, the National Review -- was able to devise how many immigrants were residing within the United States faster than the U.S. government could produce that data. And offering further proof that former Gov. Sarah Palin's (R-Alaska) crib notes have become something of a political meme is Kathryn Jean Lopez, who notices a famous country singer penning notes on his hand.… Read More »
The Washington Independent
"The story of coals dirty, deadly legacy" headlines The Washington Independent this morning. The story relates the political significance, health effects and community impacts of a fossil fuel that reporter Mike Lillis believes has White House's clear embrace.Earlier, Lillis looked at one element of Democrats' forthcoming jobs bill: A proposed unemployment insurance extension. The bill offers jobless Americans an additional three months of aid -- less than what the White House's budget requests, but on par with the House's extention, passed late last year.… Read More »
Red State
Michael Steele's remark this week -- that he has been subject to intense criticism because of his race -- has earned the scorn of Red State's Eric Erickson, who lambasts the Republican National Committee chairman in a blog post published late Tuesday. "Actually, it could have nothing to do with race and everything to do with outsourcing the RNC to the same consultants who have been bleeding the RNC dry for years," he says of Steele's low popularity. "It could have something to do with management styles. It could have everything to do with the Chairman never meeting a shoe he didn’t want to eat."… Read More »

Jonathan Singer on Wednesday explores the current state of President Barack Obama's judicial nominations. But with the help of Slate's Doug Kendall, he finds that the president has both nominated fewer and confirmed fewer judges to federal benches than his predecessor at this point in his presidency. Concludes Singer: "But with a real crisis in the judiciary in the form of dozens of vacancies, one has to wonder why this President has nominated fewer than half of the judges nominated by his predecessor."… Read More »

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »
