Americans strongly prefer Obama, Biden over Bush, Cheney

By Michael O'Brien - 11/03/09 10:07 AM ET

Americans prefer President Barack Obama over former President George W. Bush by a 23-point margin, according to a poll released Tuesday.

Fifty-seven percent of Americans said in a CNN/Opinion Research poll that they believe Obama has been doing a better job as president than Bush had during his eight years in office. Thirty-four percent of Americans said Bush did a better job.

Vice President Joe Biden enjoys a slightly narrower but still large margin over his predecessor, by contrast. Fifty-four percent of those surveyed told CNN they preferred Biden to former Vice President Dick Cheney. Thirty-eight percent of voters like Cheney better.

Overall, 54 percent of Americans said they approved of the way Obama is handling his job, while 45 percent disapproved.

Obama received his highest marks from voters on his handling of environmental policy, the federal government's response to swine flu, and foreign affairs.

He received more troubling results on his handling of illegal immigration, the federal budget deficit, healthcare policy and the situation in Afghanistan.

The poll, conducted Oct. 30-Nov. 1, has a 3 percent margin of error.

Oh REALLY! I want to see the polling breakdown on this. There's no way in [***].BY Karen on 11/03/2009 at 11:20
In a poll conducted today 64% of Americans strongly preferred Ahmadinejad-Khatami to Saddam-Mooqtada. This makes the former almost as popular as Obama-Biden, and far far ahead of Bush-Cheney, who trailed in last, just behind Beelzebub-BaalBY elixelx on 11/03/2009 at 11:23
CNN polls always lean to positive results to their favored liberal candidate. Some say it's just poor method, others agrue that poor method would slant ever result the liberal direction and can't rule out that CNN does it on purpose. When a realiable pollster with a verifiable accuratcy comes out with results than write about it. CNNs is the anti-thesis to honest, unbiased and accurate polllingBY Shawn S on 11/03/2009 at 11:26
What a crock…Bush/Cheney are gone and we can't move backward in time. So, why is this relevant other than to provide a positive spin for Obama? More evidence of a media in the tank for Obama.BY CodeWarrior on 11/03/2009 at 11:34
CNN? You really call that 'reliable'? I think not.BY Repubtallygirl on 11/03/2009 at 11:35
34% think Bush did a better job? On the basis of WHAT? They LIKE poverty and death?BY ignatz on 11/03/2009 at 11:49
Anybody who doubts these results must live in a bubble. Maybe Obama is less popular than Bush among white Republicans. Just about everyone else hates Bush with a vengeance.BY Dan on 11/03/2009 at 11:50

Good to see that CNN polled all 100 of their viewers. Obviously these viewers want government run auto, banking, internet, health care, and energy controls all at taxpayer's cost. However with 7.2 million unemployed and rising that free ride will be limited. And again they blame Bush..total idiots..Obama was in Congress before becoming president voting yes for the issues we are facing todayBY bailedout on 11/03/2009 at 12:31

Drudge Report
"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »

John Aravosis points out that Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) has dropped most of his unprecedented blanket hold on most of the White House's nominees -- except a few defense posts, which remain tied up as Shelby seeks two lucrative military contracts for his home state. Later, Aravosis reports that the Department of Health and Human Services has opened an investigation into the California Blue Cross health insurance program, following reports that premiums there have increased 39 percent recently.… Read More »

News that Iran may have started enriching uranium has prompted The Corner's Mike Potemra to issue the Middle Eastern state a warnining: "It’s not too late for Iran to turn back from such a disastrous course: Even evil regimes — regimes that systematically violate the rights of their own people — have the use of intellect." Also, gues blogger Ralph Reed offers his thoughts on former Gov. Sarah Palin's national political aspirations.
