Obama not to travel to Afghanistan before making final troop decision

By Tony Romm - 11/03/09 01:36 PM ET

President Barack Obama will not travel to Afghanistan prior to making his decision about whether to deploy more troops there, the White House revealed Tuesday.

Nevertheless, the president is likely to announce that decision in some form of speech to the American people, press secretary Robert Gibbs added during Tuesday's press briefing, though he did not reveal whether that meant the president planned to address the country or a joint session of Congress in prime time.

"I know the president has told us, not necessarily as it relates to some venue or some speech, that it is important for the American people to understand why he made the decision that he's made," Gibbs said.

"I anticipate the president will spend some time walking the American people through the process that we've undertaken and the decisions ... he's made along the way to come to the ultimate conclusion," he added.

However, both points are likely to anger the president's harshest critics, some of whom believe he should visit the troops before he makes policy concerning them, and some of whom lament his media overexposure.

Still, Gibbs said Tuesday the president would meet again with the Joint Chiefs of Staff later this week or next week to discuss strategy options, but he did not specify when the president might come to a decision about troop levels.

It's not a vacation spot. Why would he go there?BY Baloney Guy on 11/03/2009 at 15:11

Here's another glaring example of the "empty suit" Obama disrespect to the US Servicemembers by not displaying any "real" leadership by increasing the number of troops who will be deployed to the Afghanistan "Killing Fields" in the safety of his warm bed, exotic dinner, while our men.women will be taking in fire daily and being injured or killed by IEDs, Sticky IEDs, etc. If he had any gumption, the 'empty suit" would at least venture to the military base where the bulk of the troops will be coming from for this troop increase. Unfortunately, I think the "empty suit" do not want to look into the eyes of people that he's going to send over to get killed(unfortun ately) and he don't want this roaming around his head because it will interfere with his basketball game or golf outing.BY Blackscholar on 11/03/2009 at 15:56
I pray that he is not going there because he cannot look into their eyes and inspire confidence. I think that our troops deserve at least that. If President Obama is not going to back them he should bring them home. The mountain winters are harsh, it is not a place to "wing" it. God bless our troops and God bless America.BY nanieliberty on 11/03/2009 at 18:19
Look, Obama has had McChrystal's request for 4 months, and still has not yet made a decision. Also, as we campaigned for his own presidential election, he repeatedly said he had a strategy and that Afghanistan is a war that we "have to win". And… he repeatedly said it was his "top" and "number one" priority as president… yet he has had time to gold with Arnola Palmer, go on his own family vacations, announce the projected venue for the 2012 Olympics… the best part is he doesn't even have time to talk to his own general that he himself put in place in Afganistan. At the beginning of October McChrystal told the press that he has only spoken to Obama ONCE in the past 70 days… interesting priorities Obama has, isn't it?BY Taylor on 11/03/2009 at 19:45
These comments are so uninformed and erroneous, especially Taylor's.Upon taking office, President Obama implemented the Afghan strategy that he campaigned about. In September, when his general on the ground told him that they had met some unexpected obstacles, Obama said he was revisiting the strategy. It hasn't even been two months. I have no idea where you got four months from, even if you have confused McChrystal's assessment with his troop request, which are not the same thing. And it is not unusual for presidents not to talk to their generals often. GWB loved war, and thus, loved talking to his war generals. But in skirting the chain of command, in which the defense secretary, not the war general, is at the top, he undermined his own administration's capacity to deal with the war.And if you stack up all the president's gold outings against all of his predecessors ranch vacays, I think Obama's tally up against GWB's will look like a cricket standing next to an elephant.BY well, actually on 11/03/2009 at 20:24
@ Well, Actually Typical Liberal talk. Obama needs to make a decision on Afghanstan as our men and women are dying… Two months is two months too long. What you tend to forget is that he knew about his war when he took oath and he had no probem then of accepting the job. and personally i am sick and tired of you Liberals always blaming Bush, Obama wanted the job, then it is his !… my consensus is that he is stalling because of the Liberals, he doesn't want them mad at him and lose their support as he has the independents. Thanks to people like you, our country is going down the pit hole.BY Debi on 11/03/2009 at 21:28
