Bachmann challenger gets boost from Franken, Oberstar

By Aaron Blake - 11/03/09 01:50 PM ET

Minnesota state Sen. Tarryl Clark (D) is getting some high-profile help in her primary to face Rep. Michele Bachmann (D-Minn.).

Sen. Al Franken, Rep. Jim Oberstar and former Bachmann opponent El Tinklenberg will all raise money for Clark in the coming days, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Franken will be joined Nov. 11 by state Senate Majority Leader Larry Pogemiller, state House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher and Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, while Oberstar and Tinklenberg will join forces Nov. 12 for a fundraiser.

Clark faces Dr. Maureen Reed for the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party's endorsement, and Reed has suggested she might also pursue a primary. Clark outraised Reed $308,000 to $130,000 in the third quarter.

I hope more people get behind any candidate who can get Mic[***]e Bachmann out of office. She really needs to be stopped. I don't know why anyone would want her in any public position. I used to hear her on the local Christian stationwhen she was running and I stopped listening, in fact I don't even want anything to do with them. The whole bunch of republicans have hijacked my faith. Michele Bachmann is a hypocrite and has no compassion for people like Jesus does. It's really sad to see elected candidates use GOD to get their way.BY mary kinney on 11/03/2009 at 15:50
Maybe Franken can give Clark the names of the ACORN people that 'Fixed' his numbers for him, that way he doesn't have to worry about some silly election!BY Jim on 11/03/2009 at 16:18
Michele Bachmann will get support from around the nation. She is brilliantShe is informedShe is the one who represents the middle classShe is the one who represents rights and freedomShe has the right stuffBY Lettyb on 11/03/2009 at 16:31

First off, The Hill needs to get it straight that Rep Backmann is a Republican. Second, I will, for the first time, giving any support that I can for her. She is not a Rhino. She is a conservative that is not afraid to speak the way she thinks. She is my Congresswoman and I am proud that she represents me in D.C.BY Dennis H on 11/03/2009 at 17:45
Mic[***]e Bachman is a ® from Minnesota, not a (D). She is also a real nut, a crazy.BY Miles W. Rich on 11/03/2009 at 18:59
"I hope more people get behind any candidate who can get Mic[***]e Bachmann out of office."There are two chances: The Sept. 14 open primary and then of course the November general election. The November general election will be the tougher row to hoe in Bachmann's solidly Republican district. http://www.immelman.us/news/can-a-democrat-beat-bachmann/BY Aubrey Immelman on 11/03/2009 at 20:33
Ms. Bachmann really needs help. Not campaign funds, but mental help.Someone should do what they can to straighten out her thoughts ,words and well being. There can't be more than two people in the world who can't see she has a lot of bats in her attic and the light bulb is a little too dim,the ladder far too dangerously rickety to get it done by herself. She needs assistance!BY Murph on 11/03/2009 at 20:58
Why is the liberal argument always 'they are crazy'. Stick to the issues. 'Healthcare reform" is not about health or care…it is about power. Michele is defending the Constitution and our liberties. Look at the bill, read the bill and wake up to the fact that our country is going down a very scary road. Instead of trashing other people who are trying to preserve our freedom, get on the bandwagon and help save our country and the liberties that our Founders fought for.BY Bren on 11/03/2009 at 21:18
A death panel by any name is still a death panel.Private or public, still in business{and business is GOOD!} or a figment of Republican scare tactics and purely hypothetical and not yet public at this point.Who becomes your death panel now when your insurance runs out too soon and your family's savings too? Republicans get elected by morons to do things morons don't understand and never even profit from in any way shape or form.Yet,they think it is their patriotic or even christian duty.Stupid is as stupid does.If you aren't a highly placed executive within the health insurance industry. Why are you voting your dollars away to pay the fat pigs???.BY Murph on 11/03/2009 at 22:08

Drudge Report
"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »
Red State
Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »
The Washington Independent
Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »

John Aravosis points out that Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) has dropped most of his unprecedented blanket hold on most of the White House's nominees -- except a few defense posts, which remain tied up as Shelby seeks two lucrative military contracts for his home state. Later, Aravosis reports that the Department of Health and Human Services has opened an investigation into the California Blue Cross health insurance program, following reports that premiums there have increased 39 percent recently.… Read More »
