Poll: Obama blamed (almost) as much as Bush for econ.

By Eric Zimmermann - 11/03/09 02:30 PM ET

Americans blame President Obama almost as much George W. Bush for the current economic situation, a new Rasmussen poll finds.

49% of respondents blame Bush, while 45% blame Obama.

Last month, the gap was much larger, with 55% blaming Bush and just 37% pointing the finger at Obama.

The White House has continuously tried to remind Americans that Obama "inherited" the fiscal crisis. The more Americans associate the poor economy with Obama, the less political capital he'll have to push his priorities.

The new Ramussen numbers, however, differ greatly from a Fox News poll last week in which 58% of respondents blamed Bush, compared to just 18% blaming Obama.

How you ask the questions often gets you the answer you want. For anyone to really believe the recession started with the Obama election, thus giving him the blame, just shows the ignorance (or maybe just plan stupidity) of the general public. The recession clearly began and was caused by actions taken way before the November elections. There are some though, that count on the ignorance of the general public to advance ideology.BY Tums on 11/03/2009 at 16:31
Your report is a bit distorted by the fact that you say "Americans blame" whereas Rasmussen polls is based on its weighting of "Likely Voters." Rasmussen discounts Obama supporters with a methodology that guesses that they will be less likely to vote. This "Likely Voter" screen explains why Rasmussen is a consistent and extreme outlier, giving Obama a -5 approval rating compared to other pollsters that have been averaging about 10. (See http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/other/president_obama_job_approval-1044.html)The Fox poll that you cite is reflects "Americans" (adults) in general, without applying the "Likely Voter" discounting. In the future, please compare apples to apples and provide some info to allow people to understand and evaluate the data that you present.BY BerkshireBlue on 11/03/2009 at 16:42
Obama is almost 25% of the way through his term, he told Americans that this was the worst economy since the Great Depression and he had to have his 'stimulus' bill to keep unemployment under 8%, yet we are looking at 10% with no end in sight. His answer was to say that it was worse than he thought it was, as if that makes any sense given his earlier comments. His borrowing and printing trillions of dollars has damaged the value of the dollar and doomed the country to massive inflation in the coming year. The coming major tax increases to pay for all of the borrowing is going to over burden businesses and individuals and will stagnate the jobs market even further. NONE of this can be blamed on Bush. The deficit has quadroupled in less than 12 months. Obama needs to man up and take some responsibility for SOMETHING. His Marxist Utopia dream is going to bankrupt this country if it isn't stopped now.BY BitterClinger on 11/03/2009 at 21:24
