Poll: Huckabee leads 2012 GOP hopefuls

By Jordan Fabian - 11/05/09 09:42 AM ET

Television personality and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee led a batch of 2012 Republican presidential hopefuls in the latest poll from Gallup.

Huckabee, ex-Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R), and ex-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) were selected as the top three GOPers whom Republican respondents would "seriously consider supporting" in the next presidential contest. Seventy-one percent of people polled selected Huckabee; 65 percent selected both Romney and Palin.

Sixty percent of Republican respondents also said they would support former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.). Lesser-known potential candidates Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) and Republican Governors Association Chairman and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour brought up the rear; they received 32 and 26 percent support, respectively.

The poll showed that several contenders have broad-based support among Republicans, but are not as well-received among the broader population. Only 40 percent of all respondents said they would "seriously consider" supporting Huckabee, the top-ranked Republican, in 2012.

No more than 40 percent of independents would "seriously consider" supporting any Republican candidate. Huckabee and Romney each earned 40 percent, while Palin received 32 percent support from the bloc.

Fifty percent of all respondents said that Huckabee is qualified to be president and 49 percent said the same of Romney. The numbers drop off for Palin, whom 31 percent of respondents said was qualified to be president.

The three front-runners remained the same as in a July Gallup poll that asked respondents which candidate they were likely to support.

The poll was based on telephone interviews of 1,021 Americans between Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

The dismal poll rating among independents for the leading Republican candidates may create an opening for Michael Steele. He's a proven fundraiser with what appears to be increasingly broad support in the party.BY Chris Baker on 11/05/2009 at 11:30
You will see a revolt on the conservative side if Huck gets anywhere near the election. Just to slick for me.BY janicegammill on 11/05/2009 at 13:12
Huck is a RINO, one of those do as I say, but not as I do. Check his record, raising taxes, in state tutition for illegals, that's not a true conservative. No Huck , no RINO.BY Cindi on 11/05/2009 at 13:21
I personally like Sarah Palin… But Huckabee would do if he can prove that he is not the same man who ran Arkansas as he did.ANYONE BUT A DEMOCRAT!JL MealerMealer Companies LLCAmericaBY JL Mealer on 11/05/2009 at 14:05
Any Republican seriously considering supporting Palin should keep a packed bag in their car so they can get out of the country ASAP. You many agree with her policies, when she can intelligently voice them, using mult-syllabic words other than "betcha," but she will be eviscerated by the Democrats and the press, and if it's a foggy day in Alaska, her foreign policy experience goes out the window. The argument was made that O'bama was not ready for prime time, and he proved that to be correct. Is Palin? Come on, get a grip. The Republican party must look long and hard, and do some serious soul-searching to come up with a VERY viable candidate for President, or all the barbs thrown at Democarats today will be returned in spades. 2012 is not the year for a "celebutard" nominee. And frankly, if the Republican party blows it again, i'm gonna' be pi**ed!BY Reality Check on 11/05/2009 at 14:26
I'm convinced that Huckabee is the best shot we've got at taking the WH back. Having researched his time in AR for myself rather than accepting the word of people with ulterior motives, it is clear that Huckabee is a man with an impeccable executive resume. He cleared out a lot of the bureaucratic bloat improved efficiency in AR - no mean feat. He IS a fiscal conservative, but he is a reasoned one. Despite the smears, the only things he spent money on were exactly the things people WANT the govt. to attend to - things like improving children's health, education necessary road improvements. Need more proof? Liberals spend money, they don't make it - Huckabee took AR from a major deficit to an almost $3billion surplus while he was governor - and he did it while working with a Democrat legislature who hated him so much that they nailed his office door to the chamber shut! Here's a guy who can handle partisanship because he has dealt with it at its worst! Not by using nuclear options, but by winning enough of them over to get them all to work together when it mattered. So many of today's pols encourage the division animus between us because they can profit politically by it. Wouldn't it be awesome to have a guy in office who not only believed in conservative principles, but also wanted to see our country united and actually had the ability to initiate that healing?BY QuoVadisAnima on 11/06/2009 at 01:02
"Only 40 percent of all respondents said they would "seriously consider" supporting Huckabee, the top-ranked Republican, in 2012."How many respondents said they'd "seriously consider" supporting Obama in 2005? Huck will destroy Obama in any debate. Obama will have a hundred whopper lies to defend, and Huck will calmly point out each. Huckabee connects with people, much like Obama, only Huckabee is REAL. Huckabee won Iowa with ZERO money and NO advertising. He makes sense, and folks like him. IF he chooses to run, he'll win.BY mark on 11/09/2009 at 11:07
