Boehner pledges to enact health plan if GOP wins during town hall

By Michael O'Brien - 11/05/09 03:07 PM ET

Republicans will enact the health reform proposal they unveiled this week if they take back the House, Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) pledged Thursday.

Appearing on the Republican National Committee's (RNC) online town hall, Boehner and other House and Senate leaders said they sensed momentum behind GOP efforts to halt Democratic health reform legislation, which is set for a vote on Saturday.

"If we get in the majority after the election, I plan to enact our healthcare plan," Boehner said during the town hall.

Appearing alongside Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence (R-Ind.), Boehner said that the thousands of protesters on Capitol Hill this afternoon demonstrated fervor against Democrats' health plans.

"How could you get 10,000 people to show up at the Capital with a few days' notice?" Boehner said, adding that he believes the intensity of opposition for health reform is 100 times greater in 2009 it was when Democrats' health reform efforts were defeated in 1994.

Republicans saw growing fervor in the response to their online town hall this afternoon, as well.

10,000 viewers tuned into the webcast during its first hour, RNC officials said, with 400 questions having been submitted through the program's website. The broadcast featured 60 Republican members of Congress, and made occasional fundraising pitches, in addition to a showcase of different Republican committees' web videos and paid television advertisements.

Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) came up with the idea for the program, which was advanced and organized by Pence and RNC Chairman Michael Steele.

Kingston characterized the reaction of lawmakers and constituents on the Hill today as "totally mind blowing," and said that the GOP would try to take more advantage of new media in the future to get out their message.

"We're connecting with Main Street America," Kingston said. "Our base has kind of moved from talk radio to email, to YouTube."

"Our domain for 10 years all they could talk about was oh them and their Fox News," Kingston added. "Well now guess what, we've opened up this new medium."

He said that the town hall, in combination with the thousands of people who rallied against the health vote Saturday, would make Democrats think twice before Saturday's landmark vote.

"If I'm a Democrat I'm watching what happened today on those Capitol Steps," he said, "I'm gonna be really careful before I throw my career away in one vote, which is going to happen for many members on Saturday."

Pence, who has a background as a talk radio host, shared hosting duties with Kingston throughout the afternoon.

The conference chair seemed bolstered by the turnout for the program and today's "House Call" on the Capitol, as well, referring to them as "one to become speaker of the House, one to become majority leader of the Senate."

The GOP launched http://LapDogs.gop.com today! Match each of the statements against government-run health care with the House Democrat who said it. Pretty creative use of the internets…BY Maggie on 11/05/2009 at 15:25
Hahaha. 10,000 people. That's .003% of America. Good luck winning elections with that. I guess Republican Rep Kingston didn't hear about the >400,000 people protested the Iraq War on multiple occasions. These Republicans aren't playing with a full deck, and on top of that they are vastly outnumbered — thank God — by the rest of America.BY Ethan on 11/05/2009 at 16:05
if the "bither", the "death panel", and the "tea bag party" are going on everyday on tv, the democrats will have even bigger majority.BY yellowfish on 11/05/2009 at 17:02
Considering the protesters only had a three day notice of assembly date and time. That number is impressive.BY D.P on 11/05/2009 at 17:44
Ummm, Ethan. Just how many Hopey Changey goobers showed up today (or any day) to rally FOR this healthcare fascism? Didn't think so!10,000 to 20,000 (some outlets have reported as much) on SHORT notice is pretty impressive! Add to that the 1,000,000-1,500,000 that showed up on 9/12 (look at the pics and video .. it was a larger crowd than ZERO's immcaulation). I'd say that the DimoRATs have reason to be afraid. VERY afraid! Passing this Bill will be their certain demise.BY DJ on 11/05/2009 at 22:27
Thankfully, for the good of the country, the GOP will not be taking back the House any time before Boehner is six feet under.BY pgbach on 11/05/2009 at 23:41
Go for it John. You just step to the plate and set it in order, and call it done!! Pelois's bill doesn't have one thing sensable in it. AND where are they going to get that money?? They don't even realize how much debt that will be AND DON'T care!!! You know you P's and Q's over there and the demos. are afraid now, after loosing 2 states back to republican. Showing the demos. and Obama they are NOT happy with his "playtime" (work )!!! Go for it, I'm behind you and all for it!!!!BY Thelma De Smit on 11/05/2009 at 23:50
I would just like to say to Ethan that those majority Americans that he calls "the rest of America" are the same ones that elected Obonehead to pose as an illegitimate President and destroy our economy and our national reputation. Nice going, majority!BY Rider One on 11/06/2009 at 08:22
