Clyburn: GOP ought to read protesters their bill

By Tony Romm - 11/05/09 05:20 PM ET

Republican voters protesting House Democrats' healthcare work ought to read the bill their GOP congressman are pitching as an alternative, Democratic Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) stressed Thursday.

Although Clyburn praised protesters for banding together to petition government -- a democratic activity, he added, that he remembers distinctly from the '60s -- he cautioned them from blindly supporting the GOP's effort, which Republican leaders debuted two days ago.

"I would hope, though, that [Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.)] would read them the bill that the Republicans put up," Clyburn told MSNBC. Bachmann organized Thursday's rally, to the chagrin of Democrats.

"It's kind of interesting. They keep talking about our bill. They won't talk about theirs," Clyburn added. "Why won't she read them their bill and find out why it is that people with coverage are allowed to have their insurance rates continue to go up?"

House Republicans' alternative has provoked mixed reactions from both sides of the political aisle. While some are satisfied with the bill's cost, others fret that it only extends healthcare coverage to 3 million uninsured Americans -- a number that pales in comparison to the 36 million House Democrats' bill is projected to cover.

Clyburn, however, seemed to suggest Thursday that Republicans were hiding that key coverage detail, as well as the fact the party omitted hard rules that prevent providers from discriminating against patients based on preexisting conditions, he told host Andrea Mitchell.

"And so, I suspect that she ought to be sharing with her party people there exactly what it is the Republicans are offering as an alternative," Clyburn said. "It's a shameful piece of legislation, and that's why they aren't talking about it."

And Clyburn should read the democrats bill out load to all Americans and then explain that bill and all the subsection of that bill.BY D.P on 11/05/2009 at 17:49
Are you kidding? Who in congress bothers to read any bills? They just follow the leader.BY Read The Bill? on 11/05/2009 at 18:29
Read my bill. I am a private employer providing self insurance health care to the people I work with. The empolyee's contribute approximately 30% of the cost for health care and premiums to the employee have not gone up for three years. Deductibles have increased by 10% over thew last three years, and that affects only the individuals who incur the expenses. The net affect is we will, as an employer will pay $4,000,000 In benefits for 500 employee's. After losing $5,000,000 over the last three years as a company we are glad that we owe no banks, no governments or other entities a dime of debt. Can government claim that distinction? ie; we can take care of ourselves we do not need your judgementalism.BY jadedfellow on 11/05/2009 at 21:34
Yes, it would be nice if the teabaggers would read the Republican Bankruptcy-to-Grave No Health Care bill. However, in my experience, teabaggers lack the reading skill to do so. Certainly, Jadedfellow can't read or is it just of matter of his me-me-me, it's all about me immorality? I wonder…BY pgbach on 11/05/2009 at 23:31
Teabagging republicans cannot read or spell. They will fight to make damn sure the insurance companies will still be able to kill them, their neighbors, family, and friends.Religion and republican ideology = Blind Faith, facts have no place in the process. Idiots.BY nors on 11/06/2009 at 01:52
And Clyburn should read the democrats bill out load to all Americans and then explain that bill and all the subsection of that bill.BY D.P on 11/05/2009 at 17:49^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^We can read our bill all by ourselves. It is gopers who complain about no one reading the bills, but it is gopers and republicans who never read the bills.DUH.BY nors on 11/06/2009 at 01:54
NORS it seams that you did not read or comprehend the article. Clyburn wanted the republicans to read there bill to the protesters. So what D.P was saying is that if one party should do it, so should the other and yet you do not get this simple concept. It's easy to point fingers and call people names, but it takes real courage and intelligence to engage in a meaningful exchange of ideas.BY MJS on 11/06/2009 at 07:42
Teabaggers are dupes who have been turned out to demonstrate via clever agit prop by the far right wing 'leadership'. Look no further than the Republican Healthcare bill…it does nothing for people…but it further enriches the already wealthy health insurance companies.Conservatives are reverse Robin Hoods…they rob from the poor and give to the rich.BY Tony M on 11/06/2009 at 10:26
Clyburn is a toad and house slave who ascribes to plantation politics. His constituents are field slaves enabled by their house slave and slave master (Democrats).BY pumabydesign on 11/06/2009 at 11:25
The argument that the GOP should read their bill is ridiculous it doesnt matter what is in that bill! It would take [***] freezing over and satan being a snowman before that bill would ever even make it to the floor let alone the presidents desk. This is another tactic of the cowardly democratic party leadership to throw blame for their failure to produce a decent healthcare reform bill on the remnants of the republicans in congress.BY Publius on 11/06/2009 at 20:52

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »
