Schakowsky: We're fighting off Stupak amendment

By Eric Zimmermann - 11/07/09 10:43 AM ET

Liberals in Congress are whipping votes to beat back Rep. Bart Stupak's (D-Mich.) abortion amendment, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) said this morning.

"We're going to be organizing today to vote against the amendment," Schakowsky told C-SPAN's Washington Journal.

Stupak's amendment explicitly bars federal subsidies from going to plans that cover abortion. The Rules Committee agreed last night to allow an up or down vote on Stupak's amendment.

The Illinois Democrat said she'll vote for passage today regardless of whether Stupak's amendment is included, but would oppose a final bill if the amendment makes it through conference committe.

"If that language were in the final final bill, I certainly couldn't support it," Schakowsky said.

Abortion is not Healthcare. Seven times more Americans have died due to abortion since Roe than Jewish Europeans died in the Holocaust. What about the rights for the unborn women who are killed in abortions?BY CivilRightsForUnborn on 11/07/2009 at 11:56
Abortion is a legal medical procedure, period. As a legal medical procedure it should be covered as any other medical procedure.BY Lee on 11/07/2009 at 12:22
Face lifts and tummy tucks are a legal medical procedure too. Should they also be covered?BY Denbo on 11/07/2009 at 12:37
The Capps amendment, which is already on the bill, prevents federal dollars from paying for abortions. The Stupak amendment would essentially cause women whose private insurance currently covers abortion care to lose that coverage after reform. It would also ban the public option from covering abortion—even if that coverage is paid for through premiums and not by the government. The Capps amendment already bans federal funding of abortion—the Stupak amendment is an attempt to make safe abortion even more inaccessible for American women. To say it is just to prevent federal dollars from going to abortions is disingenuous.BY Angie on 11/07/2009 at 13:00
What this really shows is that post-reform insurance coverage will be dictated by the government as it panders to each special interest group.BY Wayne  on 11/07/2009 at 13:07
I don't care if it covers abortion or not…but it damn better cover birth control, vesectomies, and tubal ligations.BY mary on 11/07/2009 at 13:12
Actually, Denbo, facelifts and tummy tucks are legal cosmetic procedures. Do try to keep up, mkay?BY RKMK on 11/07/2009 at 15:00
This is exactly why GOV'T should NOT be in charge of health care. If we had private insurance that could be sold across state lines, then each person could decide what they want included in their insurance plan. Makes sense to me, but this isn't about choice or reduced costs or covering the uninsured. This is about power. This is a bad idea that the CBO says will now cost over 3 TRILLION dollars. This country won't survive this crazy spending…be prepared.BY MLM411 on 11/07/2009 at 15:22
RKMK…Rarely is abortion a medical necessity but it is in fact in most cases and elective procedure.Do try to keep up…mmmmmmk?BY Brian on 11/07/2009 at 15:35
The people in favor of this amendment are in favor of making more dead women and motherless children. Some abortions are medically necessary for a woman to go on living. Some of those abortions won't be performed if this amendment becomes part of the final bill. So everyone who votes for this bill, pencil in the time on your calendars for the rest of your lives to visit widowers and orphaned kids and say, "Yeah, I voted for your wife/mother to die. But at least she died for my political principles."BY paul on 11/07/2009 at 15:44

Drudge Report
"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »

John Aravosis points out that Sen. Later, Aravosis reports that the Department of Health and Human Services has opened an investigation into the California Blue Cross health insurance program, following reports that premiums there have increased 39 percent recently.… Read More »
