Tempers flare in House debate

The House debate on healthcare got testy this morning, as Republicans repeatedly interrupted and objected to Democrats' remarks

A group of female Democratic lawmakers were using a procedural manuever--asking unanimous consent to extend their remarks--to add a comment or two about the effect of healthcare reform on women.

Upset Republicans asked Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.), who was presiding over the House, to grant an additional 30 minutes of debate to each party. When Dingell turned that request down, GOPers began to continually object to the Democratic speeches.

Having grown up in a newspaper family, I have taken interest in politics from an early age. The first really famous person I ever saw General Eisenhower near the Conrad Hilton during his campaign. Most of my friends are younger than I am; they can't remember those Ozzie and Harriet days, when Democrats and Republicans took pride in working together for the good of the country. We had defeated Hitler and people were optimistic about the future and even a ten-year-old knew the two-party system was an important part of why the country stayed on a pretty sensible track. But the shameful actions of the Republican Party during the last year especially with regard to the very health of our nation portend an ominous end to the two-party system of my lifetime. No more Loyal Opposition in America! Rather the Republicans of America have, as a group, taken the way of the enemies Eisenhower and my America defeated. They have worked in concert, agitated to a frenzy by the most brownshirt mouths on the right, to deliberately lie to and scare the American public, lies so ridiculous, yet so single-voiced, one would wonder was it crafted by a modern day Goebbels? On this day, I am proud of America and and of my Democratic Party for fighting for the average Joe, but I mourn the death of an honorable two-party system.BY Smilinjack on 11/07/2009 at 18:10
SMILINJACK can't see the forest with all of these trees in the way. You're a drone. Socialized medicine always rations drugs and treatment, always kills new medical technology development and destroys liberty. If it were SO VITAL to have, why doesn't the Pelosi plan go into effect immediately? How does the all-knowing, all-caring government expect to have enough physicians to care for 36 million more patients? Why has Congress specifically exempted theselves and their families from being required to purchase the same plan that they benevolently decided we must be required to purchase under penalty of law? Where in the Constitution has Congress been grented such power to require citizens t purchase anything? SMILINJACK, you are part of the problem if you can't see the powergrab the Dems in Congress are attempting here. The current Administration is a disaster. I concur with your remarks with one major exception. You've got the two parties mixed up. If you'll go back and replace Republican with Democrat and vice-versa you'll be dead on right.BY Bill on 11/07/2009 at 21:50
