House passes anti-abortion amendment

The House just passed a polarizing anti-abortion measure that would prevent insurance plans that receive federal subsidies from covering abortion.

The amendment, which will now be attached to broader healthcare legislation, passed 240-194. Sixty-four Democrats voted "yes" along with all but one Republican.

Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz.) voted present in an effort to help kill the amendment and thus harm the chances of passing the entire bill. National Right to Life has announced they'll hold Shadegg's "present" vote against him in their annual legislative scorecard.

Democrats saw the amendment, offered by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), as a necessary concession to round up the 218 votes they need to pass the larger healthcare bill.

Stupak had threatened to muster enough pro-life Democrats to defeat the whole reform bill if he didn't get a vote on his amendment.

I am done with the Democrats. For some reason, they think it's OK to throw women's rights, especially poor women's rights, overboard. I felt that Obama ran a sexist primary campaign, and I thought that women's rights would be in peril if he won. I was right. I am not supporting this attack on women's rights. If you don't want an abortion, then don't have one. Don't make that choice for someone else. Who's the commie? Me who wants everyone to have their own choice or you that wants to make choices for everyone. Don't think that because you don't believe in abortion you "win" at life and you are God's "star humans". Dear Pro-Choice, You and all the others who think, a woman has a right to kill unborn babies, need to get over yourselves, and you need to soon. God will judge all of you. He commands all of us, even those who don't believe in him not to kill. Just because people don't believe in God, does not mean he does not exist. He most certainly does. I have received many miracles from him, including the grandson I prayed for 3 years ago he is now 17 months old and a very big Blessing to our family. This amendment does not ban abortion from our country. It only prohibits the costs of the procedure from being covered by certain insurances. After doing a little research, I found that most health insurances never covered abortion anyway…unless the fetus was endangering the mother's health or if it was due to a rape/incest. The problem now is that federally subsidized health insurance providers aren't allowed to fund abortions for ANY reason. So, if your baby is killing you or if you are having your rapist's kid, I hope you can afford your own abortion because your health insurance ain't covering it! " I have to disagree, just because a women is raped still doesn't give her the right to end somebody else's life. I love how people get all sanctimonious about abortion. Republicans get to preach morality at someone else, with no cost to themselves. Yet when it comes to another moral issue (namely, providing health care for recent mothers), suddenly it's a pocket book issue, and Republicans find every excuse to save themselves a buck.Republicans care about children from conception to birth.BY Abby on 11/08/2009 at 20:22
